Chickadee-dee-dee

Chickadee-dee-dee, acrylics, 5" x 7"

Small, quick painting done to try to "loosen up". I've decided to try to do more of these very small paintings, so that I can do quick ones and try to not get too caught up in details. Hopefully after doing several ones, my painting will be a bit more painterly.

Darn background again.. I feel like it's too "gloom and doom", but my husband likes it.

Thanks to DeeOtter on DeviantArt for providing the reference photo for this black-capped chickadee.

I might just do a series off little birds.. Tempting.

What a sweet bird. I'd have liked to see a bit of warmth in the perch too but it still has its appeal.

Thank you Gayle,

I think I might add some warm yellow somewhere. It might work.

Re: Chickadee-dee-dee

Definitely not my style but I like how you did it. One thing I would say and I am far from a bird expert but the legs seem to close the the head and it makes it look like the bird is about to tip backwards. Just my $.02, probably not even worth what you paid for it though

Re: Chickadee-dee-dee

Thank you for your comments scmelik. The legs actually start way past the middle of the belly, but they are hidden by the fluff. I indicated the "elbow" with shading, but I guess it's not very obvious. I might make it more obvious then. The reference photo is like that too. I guess the chickadee had just landed on the mini-stump.

Re: Chickadee-dee-dee

Good work...proper foot placing...it sometimes looks odd but they are amazing critters. Last year I took a load of bird photos between Vic and the ferry at a little glassed in building full of tropical birds and butterflies and snakes. I hope to live long enough for all the paintings I would like to do!

Lovely. Such a good capture of one of my favourite birds. Sitting here watching one on my feeder right now.

Re: Chickadee-dee-dee

Thank you Jonc50. Oooh, I need to go take pictures there soon. It's the Butterfly garden! My son went last year and they loved it. I just haven't had a chance to go yet. I want to go now

Thank you Ella. I love chickadees too, they have so much character for such little birds!

Nice! The bird is so sweet, and the bark texture is really cool.

This is a great little bird. You have really captured the fluffiness of the feathers.

Love it all. The background is bright enough to chase away any doom and gloom.

Every painting is practice for the next one ... looking forward to seeing your next one. I agree with Margaret that the background is bright enough to chase away any doom and gloom. You might try a similar version with a very pale pink background. I've always liked the combination of pink and gray.

Re: Chickadee-dee-dee

I like this little fella, with feathers all fluffed up to combat the cold. Very nicely painted.
Well done,
Steve.
