Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

LOL Mary, maybe I'll do that if they can't fix it. One day when it was storming the power went off for a second. Then windows wouldn't start but after fiddling I got it work again. The next day it needed to restart and again windows wouldn't start and I couldn't get it work. Figured I better get pros to look at it. Still haven't heard anything.

Well Carl, some people do cover things with broken eggshells and paint them, so that idea isn't so unusual. lol But no, I covered empty eggshells with clay. Today I will sand them smooth, and eventually put some bead work on them.

I did attempt this project yesterday. Took a picture then repainted the whole thing with my favourite tiny brushes.

Michelle - I think maryinasia found the computer problem - a computer that is covered in clay...HA "tiny brushes"....you can only use one.

Kay great to see your jumping in too. Yeah that Tonalism bit was way way out there..I am not even getting close to it..we should de-Host the Host!!!!!

Cheers all.

Well, just think in tones of a single colour - with maybe the odd bit of other colour mixed in to change it slightly - but concentrate on light to dark and shades in between - how about that eh?
It's 'spring' themed, so nice and bright?

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

I don't think it was out there, and I hope more people will try it.

If you go back to that link I posted, there are lots of examples of tonalism. I do like that style, it's all about mood. It's one of those things that should be easy but I struggled. But I may have picked a bad brush or something, I had a lot of trouble with paint lifting. I think that's really why I gave up. I might try again yet.

Just think limited palette, subdued colours, soft style. You can still have high range of values.

http://www.buildart.com/secret_of_tonalism.htm
A link to an article by Robert Bissett with examples of Tonalism sources and then, at the end, his own modern attempts.
It's quite a good explanation.

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

Hi all - Great article. I am making progress some on tonelism. The problem is the bright happy spring part with subdued colors...I am getting there, maybe .

Happy St Patty's Day all ....

Cheers

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

I got mine done, well at least I think so. Did the big brush (the biggest one I had but on a small canvas 8x10) and the spring part is ok, not so sure about the tonalism but I did try.

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

Well after not painting at all for a couple of months, for one reason and another, I finally started something yesterday. We'll see how far I get. Great challenge Carl--the tonalist approach is really making me think about choices. Not that my choices will turn out to have been good ones.

Progress! I think I have successfully managed to reach the "ugly" stage!

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

Never knew James Whistler was a tonalist. Of course I didn't know what tonalism was until recently.

I've got something going. Now to not mess it up. The final strokes will be nerve wracking.

Enjoying using one of my big brushes that I hardly ever use.

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

john - great to hear. Looking forward to you finished piece. Hang in there and boldly cast those big final brush strokes.

ColinS - oh dear and I thought my ugly stage was the finished work.

Well, mine is done and not sure it will qualify for tonalism, but did use a flat 1.5" brush. See you tomorrow.
