Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

I like this revision. I wasn't so sure I could pull off tonalism as I like strong contrasts. I do like a big brush. My largest--and current favorite--is a 3" mottler, second favorite a 2" mottler. So I just need to find a spring theme...(it has been spring where I live since January).

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

I do have a 1.5 inch brush that I think I could handle.

This challenge was a very good idea though. It appears that none of us knew anything about tonalism so this is a very good learning experience.

Not feeling the spring vibe out here lol. I almost couldn't open the back door this morning, the snow had drifted up there over night. Taking the dog out took a bit of work.

Well Michelle, it sounds like the views from your windows and doors are a given for tonalism!!!
Except, of course, it would be winter rather than spring!

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

Out here, there is no spring, it's cold and then it's hot. We can expect snow or frost any time until the end of May. So a Manitoba spring does fit well with the challenge.

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

Hi All,

Remember, Spring is not here yet. It arrives the day we post those paintings. Big wet snowflakes are falling here in Eastern WA State tonight as I write. OK - lets all sing along:

Season Song

It is springtime, it is springtime
Winter’s gone, winter’s gone
Summer time is coming, summer time is coming
It won’t be long, it won’t be long.

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

The school here closed for 2 days! I think that's the first time in decades that it actually closed. The buses didn't run for 4 days (son was happy), first because of the snow and yesterday because they still didn't finish cleaning all the country roads and the temperature dropped. Today is one of those days where the air hurts your face. Good thing this isn't a plein air challenge.

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

I am very attached to my detail brushes. For this, I ended up using a 2" angled brush I had bought for painting my house. This is proving to be a tough challenge for me, but love the opportunity to "loosen up" and am starting to enjoy where my painting is headed.
Thank you, Mayfly for the challenging challenge!

Thank you Konfuzd. Big brush painting can be fun and surprising as to what the results can be.

Cheers all..

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

I think I've painted something that can be called tonalist--or maybe pass as tonalism anyway (at least by one definition I found). All painted with a 3" brush. So I think I'm ready for the 21st!

Thanks for the great challenge, Carl!

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

Just came back to see if I could wrap my head around the challenge and saw the revision! Feels a bit more do-able! ^_^ I still will try to use tonalism but at least now I won't feel so silly if I fudge it totally! LOL

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

I put the pro in procrastination.

As soon as I saw that on Facebook I knew I had to use it here.

I do have a canvas ready and an old photo to use as a reference. But then I was wishing I could put it on my computer and play with the crop first. But my computer broke last week and I took it in on Friday, and the computer place is busy and behind, yesterday they still hadn't looked at it. I could use my son's computer I suppose. But in the meantime, I took out my clay and started covering eggs with it. Okay, maybe I will put the eggs aside and try to paint today.

Michelle, I think you are on the right track. Uh, covering clay with eggs? So what is with the computer?

I might like to jump into this challenge but not sure about the tonalism part so may leave that out.
