Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

I thought I had a perfect reference photo...but then I was reminded about the big brush part.... maybe if I used both ends of it...

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

Hi All,

Maureen nice to hear from you.

Everyone - How does one make a misty, no hard edges, mysterious looking stage for a painting in acrylic?

Do you paint the main details then blur it all
or
blur it first then blur in details?

Cheers

Carl, look in the paint-a-longs in the Information Kiosk for the one on hard and soft edges .... I'd make a link but the tablet often won't oblige with copy and paste!
Ususlly, to show softness and 'lost' edges, the tones of b/g and object need to be similar.

Great that you are here Maureen; all good wishes to you!
Carl, with a big brush I can only blur. It will be a series of mushy darkish colours on the canvas. PLEASE don't expect detail unless painting a house wall! Hubby won't let me!

Hi All,

I will check out the paint-alongs. Thanks Maureen.

Margaretta - I am good with no details. Now we need to make that murky dark stuff sing of Spring!!!! I am trying to figure that one out.

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

My approach will be that I will do the best I can for the challenge, and then probably finish the painting later.

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

Hi,

How would you all feel about changing the challenge a tad?

Proposed Modification

The challenge would be using 1 brush (any size) and all about Spring!!! Pick your favorite Spring theme and use the same brush throughout.

Bonus points - if you use a "Big" brush (larger than 1.5 inches)

Extra Bonus Points - Using the Tonalism style

How does this sound? Cheers

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

About blurring, in watercolor if you want to soften an edge you use a damp brush and let the water diffuse it. I found I can do the same thing in acrylics by keeping a little container of glazing medium on my palette. After I put down the strokes I dip into that and soften the edges so that they can blur into the background.

Re: Different Strokes - A Forum Project for March 2017

Carl that sounds good to me, I might still be trying for Tonalism but without that being part of the challenge, failure is an option (maybe even a given).
