Virginia City, Nv. Out Building

Gouache

I did this study for a larger planned oil painting. I and another artist friend were staying at the St. Marys Art Center in Virginia City, NV. We were out looking for a location to set up our easels and came upon this scene.
There was just something about it that appealed to me.

I really like this. I have trouble getting this much punch out of gouache. It definitely feels like the Southwest. Gary

Hi Gary, thank you
I love the Southwest it's a whole different color palette. When I painted this I lived in Northern California. I now live in NW Arizona and love painting the high desert and mountains.

WOW! You have certainly caught the intensity of the colors!

Thank you, 'ntl'
I thought I had replied to you, but I don't see it. I love color and like to push the color. I mix my own neutrals and earth colors.

This is lovely! The character of the building really comes out between your drawing and color palette.

I am new to gouache - and I love it - but am basically using it flat with large blocks of color for some retro SF illustrations (or as a friend quipped, “you’re using gouache like it was poster paint”), but I would love to get better at using shades and tints and such. Artists such as yourself are an inspiration, for sure.

Well done! I like the handling of paint, especially the foreground.
