Lily Blooms

Another Easter Lily, I'm a glutten for punishment. Does anyone see any thing that I could do to improve. I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: Lily Blooms

I like it and the overall impression, but I think the background might need variation in the tone?

I'd love to see something like this where the flowers are given more prominence i.e. move them down and maybe paint them larger, I feel the flowers don't have enough breathing space. Also it would give the leaves less prominence (unless that is the effect you are after) and if more were faded into the background it would give them more of a 3D effect. They also seem to have a blue halo effect which jars a little with me.

I do like the sweep of your lily petals and that one at the back is just gorgeous.
Are these painted from life?

Re: Lily Blooms

I know what you mean, Janet, I'd changed the b/g so many times(that's why the blues there, I'll need to get rid of). Thanks for taking the time to c&c.
Hi, Marion,
Thanks for stopping by. I thought the blue might help give that 3D but I guess not. It started off from life then I went on to pictures once my last lily died on me. Now, I'm kind of doing it from imagination. At first, I thought maybe w/a little contemporary flare. I wish I could come up w/a solution to the b/g. How do you think I handled the focal flower's lights/shadows?

Re: Lily Blooms

Grace, I like the way you handled the flowers, that's why I would like to see them take up more of the picture plane I can see improvement in each painting.

Re: Lily Blooms

Thanks, Marion, in the next one(another lily maybe?). After doing only a few florals, I really respect those who do them. They are every bit as hard as doing portraits. They are floral portraits. I'm glad you see improvement, sometimes I think I'm only spinning my wheels and not getting anywhere.
Well, I took your advice on getting the blue out:

Re: Lily Blooms

Nice work, Grace! I would add a bit more warms within the cool tones of the green leaves and lilies themselves...as they are now they're pretty cold. I'd like to see the stems and leaves carried down as well and not floating. But all of that said, it is a super painting regardless.

Re: Lily Blooms

That is good constructive criticism, Kay. I'm going to try that. Thanks. I like your colorful watercolors.
