Mule deer buck

I am back to animal subjects after some time away to improve my landscapes. This is an 8x10 on Pastelmat, using pretty much every brand I have of hard and soft pastel. No pastel pencil on this one, but only because I forgot about those Reference photo by Instagram user creekbedphotography to whom I pay a fee for artist use.

Re: Mule deer buck

I like the grayed down colours here. The deer looks to be enjoying a peaceful moment. There is something about that gaze that I really like

Beautiful painting, especially that gorgeous light on the fur and antlers!

Such a handsome animal and you did a great job with him. He kind of has a Mona Lisa smile, as if he knows we are admiring him.

Ha, I think they do know when you are admiring them This deer lives on a refuge so has little to fear from humans, maybe that is why he is relaxed.

Thanks for all the comments everyone I like the muted palette but wasn’t sure what others would think. To me it adds to to calm feeling.

Re: Mule deer buck

You have captured a lovely sense of regal calmness. The grayed palette helps convey this, but your drawing and painting skills are equally important. Very nice!
