Paint Along with Johannes this September!

Paint Along 59: The Virtue of Reflected Light

Artists use a great add-on technique in their paintings that you rarely, if ever, see in reference photos or in outdoor scenes. That is the effect of reflected light, an indirect light that bounces off nearby objects, and that takes your painting to a higher level. By using this effect, dark and boring shadows come to life with variegated colors in a somewhat lighter value. This gives the object an enhanced sense of dimension. Knowing how to use reflected light will bring interest to your painting subjects, including in portraits, wildlife scenes, and still lifes.

You will learn how to:
  • Depict luminous cast shadows
  • Make your rocks sing with vibrant color
  • Create far more interesting scenes with buildings
  • Enhance seascapes and waterfalls
  • Perk up snow in light and shadow

The class is called a “paint along” for good reason. You are given drawing templates before each class so you can trace the scene onto your canvas. During the live sessions, students can paint along or watch as Johannes shares painting techniques and professional secrets, shows how to mix pleasing colors, and answers student questions on the spot. You also have the opportunity to submit your painting for Jo’s personal suggestions. Students enjoy sharing ideas with each other and making new friends during the classes. Join Johannes Vloothuis and hundreds of like-minded artists for this in-depth and fun-filled workshop. Register now and get ready to paint landscape paintings that will be inevitably be contemplated with awe!

Easy-to-paint subjects include:
  • A street scene from a village in Greece packed with flowers (watercolor)
  • A deep forest with a shallow stream running over wet rocks and reflecting beautiful colors (oils)
  • A covered bridge in Vermont with cast shadows over the foreground (pastels)
