Re: Varied ways to approach galleries

I want to thank the original poster for asking this question here on the business forum, and also thank everyone for all of the helpful advice they have shared. The galleries my work hung in closed during the economic downturn and I decided to take a couple of years away from galleries (although I did sell work on my own). Now I've decided that the time has come to seek new representation and I felt like I was at a loss as to how to do this...until I came on this thread. Thanks for all of these wonderful ideas - I'll be trying some of them out very soon and will let folks know what works.

I will say that I achieved representation in all of my previous galleries on personal recommendation from other artists or else getting to know the owner via attending openings and special shows/exhibits. I'm going to continue this personal contact as well because I think in the long run schmoozing can really help :-)

Nancy

Re: Varied ways to approach galleries

I either get asked to hang or I am not above or below just walking in to ASK how they accept submissions. What their process is, how long, criteria, contracts, etc. They are afterall, just people running a business so how upset can they get if you are asking how they do it. A snotty gallery I am not interested in AT ALL. I've never run across one but have heard the horror stories of nasty gallery staff more than nasty gallery owners. Anyways...good luck to each and everyone of regardless of how many galleries we have hung in and HAppy New YEar as well!!
