Portrait in charcoal.

Guys, here is another portrait that I did in charcoal... I need some critiquing. I feel like is needs some more work. I am trying to get the hand of values. I took a picture of it instead of scanning and the camera just doesn't capture quite correctly. I did attach the reference photo.

This is nicely done. Your reference photo isn't the best for studying values because it's backlit so everything is basically in shadow. The same problem happens in reverse with a frontal flash. For learning about shading try to find a sidelit photo so you have more defined light/shadow areas.

I do agree that your reference photo is not the best. No problem - you can "extrapolate" some stuff.

Very nice light on the shoulders. Yes, be a little bolder with the dark values. A suggestion would be to make some areas in the hair darker. Look at the reference photo to see where I mean. Perhaps you could define the jawline a tiny bit more? I would say the same for the nostrils as well.

For starters

And most importantly is how you want your portrait to be. As of now, it has a bit of a muffled look.

I am sure there are things you could do to make it better, but I really like it as is. It has a painterly feel to it. The softness is very appealing. Good job!

I agree with Bren, JDGUY.

You may need to take another look to her mouth and eyes. The mouth sould be wider and the eyes...shorter. You can drop a line form the eyebrows `s outer corners and you will see that her eyes are a bit shorter in length.

Nice work.
