Re: The Gods Speak

This looks great, I love the fluffy coat on the baby centaur.
I remember your first cover for these books.
Book covers are interesting (huge Michael Whelan fan!)
I like how you did the clouds and rain I take it that's where the authors name and book title will go.
I'm working that out on my first book cover, the space needed for that. By looking at my books at home it looks like 1/2 to 1/3 of the top is needed for that.
Is that your experience also?
Any advice for a new book cover artist?

Re: The Gods Speak

Wonderful work. Book covers are important, the reader will spend much time gazing at it. It's a visual of the imaginary world they've been immersed in.

Re: The Gods Speak

Thank you everyone!

DIANNA, can't give much advice as I'm really new to cover art myself. I will say that always give more room around your focal area as you can. The image can always be cropped down, but, you can't add in more art background if it doesn't fit the format or just needs more space for title and cover type. On this one I tried to make the background generous in my initial drawings for that purpose. Then, when I transfered it onto my painting panel, I added another inch all around. The background elements continue to the edges, but, all the important elements of the art are contained in the center. This can be cropped way down to a horizontal rectangular format, or a taller narrower vertical format.

This is shown cropped to a vertical narrower format.

And a horizontal format.

I love the centaurs !!!
They remind me of Boris Vallejo's work.

Re: The Gods Speak

Great work. I'm just looking to get into book cover illustrations myself, and it's great to see this one. Will you post a link or image of the final cover design with type? I'd love to see it.

Re: The Gods Speak

Hi Lawrence! I don't have anything to link to yet. Last I looked the authors website was down and I haven't seen the book on amazon yet with the first one. As soon as I have anything I will post it here. 🙂
