Wind River- Final Oil- 6x8 version

After working on the Pastel of this scene, I was very interested in developing an Oil version. This 6x8 has more subtle and lighter varieties of color and value, especially in the distant mountain. To me, this seems to create more 'space' in the painting, even though it's smaller. The changes is drawing and shapes were less important goals than those.

Revisions and the Final are posted later in the thread-

This version feels a lot cooler than the pastel version, probably more realistic to the actual scene. I like both. Gary

Thanks Gary! It is- I may push some more intensity of warm tones in the foreground. As it's photo work, the truth is less clear.

Both versions are beautiful, but I think I prefer the pastel one - might be because of the richer colors. Wish I could see both in person, and as I said, both are beautiful!

Re: Wind River- Oil- 6x8 version

Thanks Ann- I like color the color in it too. Some of the distant colors have less options for me in Pastel, and I want to explore them. A revision is posted below, which brings more color to the foreground especially.

Thanks Caroline! Wilderness is so open and quiet- it takes a bit of getting used to after city-busy, but you can hear the smallest of noises so far away. Peaceful-

Here is today's revision- it includes warming and sharpening the foreground/rocks/etc., glazing/refining the mountains- push and pull here and there:

Re: Wind River- Revision Oil- 6x8 version

Ken, wonderful oil work and the revisions create even greater depth and dimension.
Wonderful palette with the warmer tones working so well against the cool colours. Beautiful contrasts and a wonderful creation of a vast spacial dimension.... I really like this.

John

Re: Wind River- Revision Oil- 6x8 version

Thanks very much John! The differences in the revisions can appear subtle, but they are important, and will move the work ahead. I love the mountains, and hope to best capture their grandeur and scale. When I next am able to be on location and paint plein-air, my sensibilities and habits will already have changed.
