Re: August 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

Wow - what awesome palettes and emotions!!!

Maryinasia - lovely happy clouds - nice depth.
Christel - Very nice on the emotions. Rather see those dead poisonous snakes. Super composition.
ColinS - Hand Man is very cool. Wow on those reds. For me fear and anger. Well done.
Ron - Very powerful. Well composed with superb emotions.
Old_Hobby - Innovative combo you have come up with here. Those poor balloons.
Cheers

Re: August 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

Mary, joyful clouds for sure.... beautiful work

tuscanny - Oh wow, you were cross alright... that came out in your original post and certainly has in your painting. Well done you.!!!

ColinS - there is a lot of emotions in the debates and this one on climate change has certainly gotten some real good points across. Love the hand, it looks like an angry hand for sure.

Rosta - brilliant display of anger and emotion. Great painting, I am in awe.

Old hobbyist - Great idea, two emotions in the painting. The wrath of God Thor and his lightning bolts calmed by the gentle colours of the the balloons. Great imagination.

Thanks everyone for the comments on mine. I guess it is a mixture of emotions , disgust and surprise .

Re: August 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

Here we go. My attempt at all abstract. C&C welcome.

1st Anger - got angry trying to paint something. Yellow Deep, Naphthol Red, Permanent Black, and Phthalo Blue - on paper. All done with a palette knife.

2nd Fear - was thinking of a scary movie. Permanent Green Light, Diox Purple, and Aliz Crimson. On a board. All Palette knife.

Re: August 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

Not feeling great this month along with having too much boring work to do.
I used titanium white and mars black on a 4 by 4 inch stretched canvas.

To me, it represents every emotion I could think of. I remember one client interpreting the exclamation point as "anger" but I use it all the time to qualify excitement of any kind.

Cool! It's interesting that now with texting an absence of an exclamation point after a positive adjective can be read as sarcasm

Re: August 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

Christel, good use of colour to convey your feelings about the situation.

Colin, that's an angry looking hand.

Ron, definitely conveys anger, with action.

Old hobbyist, interesting way to show a mix of emotions. Or perhaps a change in emotions.
Thor: FEEL MY WRA... oh, balloons!

Carl, good job with the abstracts. Emotion conveyed by colour, texture, and shapes.

Clever Sheila. Excitement, anger, emphasis. The exclamation point gets a lot of use these days.

Re: August 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

Merri - I love the expressions and the choice of palette. Ugh, there's something disgusting about eating insects.

Mary - lots of joy and movement in those clouds, lovely.

Christel - I get the anger but I think the dog looks a bit repentant . Nicely painted.

Colin - the skeleton hand makes a powerful image, good choice of colours, the red/black combo really sings. Nice.

Oldhobbyist - great mix of emotions and images - balloons and thunderbolts - wow!

Carl - I'm definitely getting the emotions in your abstracts, nice colours and shapes. Love the scary colours.

Sheila - 'less is more' - clever.

Re: August 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

As I said at the beginning I'm still not sure how human emotions such as
1. Happiness
2. Sadness
3. Disgust
4. Fear
5. Surprise
6. Anger
can be adequately related to inanimate objects such as clouds or balloons.
But those who took up the challenge mostly ignored my comments and applied them to humans.
I was kinda hoping that someone would attempt a fearful still life or a disgusted seascape. Well, there is still time...

Re: August 2019 Different Strokes Challenge

Ron - an effective image.
Jim - happy optimistic balloons facing angry clouds. A metaphor for the human condition.
Carl - they are both good. I especially like "Anger".
Sheila - a super graphic approach to the challenge---very effective.

Old Hobbyist:

I don't think that anything was ignored, it's just that examples of that are not often seen in fine art. It definitely is in illustration, fantasy art and animation, all commercial applications of artistic expression of emotions in characters, some of them not living subjects. Disney and Warner Bros. classic-era movies and cartoons are accessible examples to remember, and think about. Human attributes and body language are assigned to just about everything, even if the subjects are not given a face!

I have something in mind to submit, I just hope that can finish before the end of the month, which is coming up soon - Yikes!
