Different Strokes Challenge - July 2019

WELCOME TO THE JULY 2019 DIFFERENT STROKES CHALLENGE

The challenge this month is :
A FOCUS ON DESIGN

and the theme is
LOOKING OUT OF YOUR WINDOW

Any window of your house, tent, caravan, unit, which has garden, junk, wood heap, buildings, clothes lines, birds, people etc.

Please include your window frame, and if you have a sill, with small objects, feel free to include if it works better with the design.

The motto is :
NEVER LET THE TRUTH GET IN THE WAY OF A GOOD STORY...
So Delete items you don't like, paint what you Like that pleases you to see and add items that you'd like to be there if you need to enhance the design to fit with negative shapes.
ALSO - pay particular attention to negative shapes as you prep your design.

[You can google ideas and tutorials - pictures of looking out of a window painted in acrylics] I wont link, because there is so much material to get ideas from. please don't copy anything - this is just ideas. ]

GUIDELINES:

All entries must be new paintings specifically for this challenge and in acrylics - any type of acrylic.
Join in the discussion about the project - it's friendly and fun to learn how others are coping/struggling/thriving!!! But no visual images!
Help can be gained from asking but also from looking for resource materials elsewhere - the RIL e.g.

A 'reveal' date for all is 21st of the month - that gives us 3 weeks to make the work, plus an extra week for latecomers.

Interpret the ideas any way you wish - be inventive, realistic, influenced by another style or '...ism' - it's up to you!

PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD WORK TO THE THREAD BEFORE THE 21ST OF THE MONTH.** Much more exciting and fun to see what 'masterpieces' appear!
If work is uploaded early it will be moved to a safe place until 21st.

At the end of the month the thread /discussion will be closed and a new challenge will begin.

**Please note, the single 'reveal' date is chosen so that we do not influence each other with our individual interpretations ......
that's the whole point of it being called 'Different Strokes'!
By all means ask questions in the thread or initiate discussion about the challenge - just don't post images!!!

You may crop, combine, zoom in and select a portion, use any part for pattern work ....... just let the imagination roam!

Reminder: by all means comment on paintings posted from 21st, but please only offer crits if requested. Thank you. ... Charlie's Mum

Most of all, have fun

Re: Different Strokes Challenge - July 2019

I have 2 windows in my 200 square foot apartment. One is frosted and locked shut. The front window is a huge, beautiful 6 foot high by 4 foot wide leaded glass monster. On the outside there are bars, screens, more bars, and the glass itself has been painted over by lousy repair people for the last 150 years this place has been here. So it's been "dressed" with heavy drapes and sheers that block all views into or out of that window. The window itself no longer rides up and down because it depends on a pulley system that has not worked in decades. I once petitioned to have the window restores and requested estimates- the lowest estimate was $50,000.

I'm going to have to be creative. This block is a historical block with some incredibly old buildings with turrets, and round domes, and incredible exterior architecture. People walk up and down the block listening to the recorded guide of Philadelphia Streets. And I hide in my own little area cursing my bad luck for weepy paint and bad broadband connections.

Ah Sheila, I did wonder if this topic was suitable, but if in your minds eye you know you have a splendid view...... Go for it, never let the truth get in the way of a good story.

I shall go forth and break glass!

Hmm, I thought I would take a break from acrylics for a while, but this is so tempting. I did one like this once from a picture I took at an old farmstead that is now a museum. Actually that was for another challenge, triadic colour harmony or something.

Re: Different Strokes Challenge - July 2019

Good morning from this side of the pond.

Sheila, I am not sure 'what breaking glass' is , but if it means raising a glass, Hey, I will join you. Salute /cheers/slainte

Imogen, that is a good idea. I never thought of a barn, but yes, and of course garden shed would be the closest thing others might have.

It would be great if you could join in Lavender Frost, I would love to see you take. If you are otherwise occupied I completely understand.

vmrs - thank you. Looking forward to seeing your contribution.

Maureen - ah you made me look out of my window to a bleak cold day.

cheers
Merri

Re: Different Strokes Challenge - July 2019

Summer gets busy with yard work and camping, and summer projects, but maybe I'll try to do a quick one. And that's if hubby moves his semi which is parked by the street blocking most of my view.

I think Sheila means she's going to break some windows to see outside lol.

It is always in your best interest to not know what I mean! There have been nights where I post and then look the next morning in total awe of the BS I have created!

I have tried this idea before because the front window itself is an imposing one. It has many, many panes with gothic arches at the top. I will do my best to bring this to life from memory. And everyone knows I enjoy a bit of the surreal element in my work!

Edit to add: Everything I paint involves me doing geometry and calculus. Nobody warned me about this in high school so when I decided to be a foreign language educator in university I skipped math!
