Derwent Test

I ordered the Derwent Lightfast pencils and thought I would give you my thoughts, although I am mostly an acrylic and oils painter. I'm enjoying my journey into colored pencils. I have a full set of Polychromos, and schpirerr farbens.
I set up a small still life for this: the size is about 9x11 on stonehenge.
The background (wall is in gouache to save time.......lazy?).
To be pure: no solvents and only burnishing, no other colors from other sets, only the Derwents.
My first thought was DARN, I need more colors to make this look good, but I hung in there. Can't wait til' they put out the other 36 colors.
Colors are earthy. Scarlet and Sun yellow seem to be the only really vibrant colors. I was wishing for a good cobalt or cerulean blue.
The colors blend really well and layer beautifully. The white is amazing and covers better than the polychromos white.

Cheers, Derek

Re: Derwent Test

Absolutely gorgeous work, Derek - I love the warm glow of the glass bottles. You've made beautiful use of those lovely golden and honey colours. I'd never have guessed that you felt the blues were lacking, as the jug looks great.

I have a couple of questions though. How long did this one take you? And did you do a lot of layering? I'm still getting the feel of my small collection of Lightfasts, so any tips would be welcome!

Re: Derwent Test

Hi Claudia: The jug has 4 basic layers and white: blue violet, nightshade, mid ultramarine, and dark turquoise. A very light kiss of midnight black as well.
The bottles have around six layers.
This took me, after the initial drawing in light pencil, about 3 days. Around 3 hours per day.

Re: Derwent Test

This is beautifully done. I love the shine and reflections. Overall, would you say the lightfast is nicer to use than the polychromos?

Re: Derwent Test

The Polychromos are excellent Vena....we'll see how the the rest of the Derwents stack up.

thanks in advance to anyone else who chimes in here.
I expect the word "test" sounds like color swatches.

Re: Derwent Test

I wish I had many "tests" like that Derek!!! It is gorgeous... The reflections are superb with all those subtle colours. And thank you for the information about using them.

I will definitely look around for these pencils, as I am ready to give away my Derwent Studio after finding the colour in my charts, while kept protected, has disappeared.

Have you found them close to Toronto, Vena?

Re: Derwent Test

I just found a video by Lacri using those pencils, and according to her they were coming from the UK to this part of the world sometime in SEP of 2018, so... They are late!

I agree that their price on Amazon is outrageous. I will wait!

Excellent endorsement of the vibrant violets within the 36, though...

Haven't seen them out this way yet, Raquel. Been to Currys and to De Serre.

Re: Derwent Test

Derek, that is gorgeous!

I got the 12-set from Staples/Bureau en Gros a month ago. I absolutely love them they are wonderful.

It seems that Canadian Staples/Bureau en Gros is getting more and more Derwent products now, there is a complete Derwent section in the one near where I work. They also now have quite a few Liquitex products.

As for DeSerre, I was told by an employee that they no longer have a deal with Derwent, supposedly it was a decision by the direction...

Edit: Here is the link for the 12-set for 25,20$CAD : https://www.staples.ca/en/derwent-li...8_1-CA_1_20001

Re: Derwent Test

Absolutely fab, love the colours and the still life subject too.
I have been rather disappointed with the lightfast lot as they seem to be just a cross between derwent artist and coloursoft rebranded lightfast pencils. I love my polychromus cant beat them and their price is better.

Re: Derwent Test

Brenda, I know what you mean. So far the real standout is the Derwent light fast WHITE.
It seems to cover better than the polychromos.
Thanks.
