"Moon" cactus.

Sooo.... I was at the corner store the other day and just couldn't help myself. I had to buy another cactus. lol I can tell the store owner thinks I'm a werido, but honey badger don't care This thing is called a moon cactus. Certainly striking looking and begging to be painted. Again.. just a study more or less. I decided no plate this time.. how about the plastic bag it came in?! I think I may regret that decision though... plastic bag is touuuuugghhhhh with out planning out all the drawing. I'm going for the soft look there so... we'll see how this ends up!

This is after about 2.5 hrs... I finish it up tomorrow. The ref photo of plant is very distorted, but decided to show just to give an idea.

Any c&C welcome. cheers

Re: "Moon" cactus.

I have a hard time with glass bottles so I can imagine what
a plastic bag would be like. So kudos for trying it and the bag
doesn't look bad.
The value and color of green part of the cactus is really close to the value and color of the background. Maybe something to think about.
I think it looks good so far....for a weirdo . Just kidding of course.
Looking forward to the finished product.

A bit more work on this. At the point where I wish everything was dry so I could run over certain parts with a fresh pass. Might have to wait a few days to do that.

Hey thanks Perry! Yes bottles and plastic bags are tricky. Glass I don't find as bad because the shapes are usually a bit more predictable and the transitions are smooth. Crinkled paper or plastic.. especially transparent is a real b#tch though. I didn't have the wherewithal to draw it all out, but there really is no other way to make it accurate AND convincing I think. A lesson for the next one I guess! lol It's strange when I looked at the photo of the painting and saw just how ragged the plastic bag transitions look. I will have to try and smooth them out.
I take your point about the BG also. It is close to the plant base colour, but I think the photo is exaggerating a bit too. Doesn't look as offensive in real life. Thanks for the input.

cheers

The addition of the plastic bag made the composition much more interesting, but also much more challenging to paint, and you are doing an excellent job so far.

Thanks Goldensun. I've always admired others paintings of plastic bags. They are seemingly simple, but very complex when you actually stop to observe the light play within them. I'm happy if I caught a glint of that in this. They will definitely be a feature in upcoming studies. cheers!

Super fun. I love your soft highlights on the cactus and the bag.
