Modern Monk -- WIP

I'd really like some input on this piece, which is 24 x 30, oil on canvas. As you can see, I've moved the monk in the rear to the side so that he doesn't look like he's sprouting out of the monk in the front! What do you think of the relative ages of the monks as compared to the photo? Any suggestions on how to develop the background in a way that looks three dimensional but does not take away from the monks? Thoughts on proportions? Any suggestions on techniques? I'm relatively new to oil painting, so I'd appreciate any help that you guys can provide. Thanks in advance!!

Re: Modern Monk -- WIP

I think you've done well by not making the head "sprout out", and by fixing the angles of the architecture, which is totally crooked in the photo and more balanced in your painting. I also like that you lowered the architecture so you will have a bit of tree or sky area above, a place to rest the eyes. The only thing that bothers me right now is your values are all off in the flesh, for example his forehead has a subtle value shift from medium to lighter, but you have it going from dark to light - too much, though I assume that this is just your preliminary sketch and you will be going over all this again and it will be fixed at that time. I don't know what you are asking about the monks ages - they are young.

Great start here! I would suggest that you keep the background buildings in a rather subdued, lower chroma, warm grays, pretty much as the photo shows. That way it won't detract from the monks.

If your goal is to focus on the figures, then, at this point at least, it looks like you have far too much of the architectural areas in the composition. And, as above, keep the background areas very grayed and muted and this will effectively pop out the colorful figures.

Re: Modern Monk -- WIP

Thank you all so much for your great comments. Please see the new version. What are your thoughts?

SL60 -- What do you think of the way in which the background is integrated. Still too much detail? I would like to keep the colors of the background in the gray/brown range but I would none the less like to get the sense of the local, ancient architecture.

WF -- Thanks. See above regarding the background. What do you think of the latest version? I tried to dull some of the more intense colors in the background. I do want to have parts of the painting be blue sky.

Visilios -- Thanks!

Allison -- Thank you for the compliments. What do you think of the value shifts in the latest version? I know that the transitions are too sharp; hoping that subsequent layers will capture the subtle changes in plane. With respect to age, I was wondering whether the monks in the painting look as young as the monks in the photo. Thanks!

A painting with a message - nice colours and composition. I like that you are taking a photo and enhancing it in so many ways so as to fix the things that the camera could not capture well. Can't wait to see the results. Good luck!

This is beautiful already. I love the contrast between the costumes and the background.

Wow. Nice. I really like the robes...bold and vibrant but don't seem unreal. I'm curious to see where this goes/develops.

Re: Modern Monk -- WIP

Thank you for your great comments! What do you think of this, latest version? Does the monk in the background feel clearly behind the monk in the foreground? I'm worried that his skin is too warm. What do you think of the background? Issues with perspective?

Animals, Ozi, Bhindi, Carolkay, and Matilda -- Thank you for the compliments!

I don't like the shadow in back of the forward boy that follows the curvature of his robe. Make the robe stand out a bit more, and increase the size of the shadow to fill the space.

Re: Modern Monk -- WIP

Here's the latest. What do you guys think? I intensified the sky and worked on the anatomy. I also made adjustments to the troublesome shadow behind the monk.

Thank you for the comments, Sana and Old Marist.
