Getting started in En Plein Aire

I was wondering if you all could give me some tips on En Plein Aire... this was something no one taught us in college and so I have no clue on this type/kind of painting... I paint in oils... so is it even wise to start this... and what all do I need for this... thanks for any info that you pass on to me...

Larry Seiler has some great demos for painting en plein air here at WetCanvas. Here's the link to one of them...

You'll find others at the front page of the Oil Painting Channel.

Can't think of any better advice to give you than to take advantage of the approximately ten step by step how-to demo's I have put together and archived here on Wetcanvas.

Plug my name "Seiler" in the homepage search engine, and about 64 pages will come up with links to those demo's....

There are a number of other artist's demo's as well, which you'll find by going to the Landscape content channel.

Here's a jump link for you to see one of my demo's done in oils, highlighting the materials..the easel I use, with even a couple mpeg videos you can watch. Its a plein air session I did last summer on the beaches of Presque Isle, several miles north of Marquette, Michigan off Lake Superior. Good luck! -Larry

Moderator should make this thread a "sticky" in the plein aire forum.

Glad the threads were a big help...but keep asking questions! I quickly learned that my needs en plein air can be quite different from someone else's!

Like...bug spray is at the top of my never-forget list!

Cool bug spray, and lotion....

And....even though I was standing on a beach of a very cool fresh water lake, (Lake Superior averages 47 to 53 degrees), I got a pretty nasty sunburn having forgot to bring lotion. Standing in one spot like that more or less said to the sun, "okay...bring it on!"

Shannon,
If you go to the pleinairflorida.org website, you will find some interesting links Re: plein air painting on the links page, including some how to's on building equipment.
Love,
Linda

Plein Aire in PA

Last summer on Cheap Joe's art forum there was a person who used the name 'pleinaire in pa'. If they kept the old files when they redid the board, you might search on it. cjas.com I think.
