we all have total failures! one of the marks of progress I feel is learning to pull those total failures around and make them work

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

Thanks for your kind comments.

I haven't been doing as much landscape sketching practice recently, but here's the best few of what I've done so far this year. I'm still working on simplifying and being bold with colour.

Any helpful comments, suggestions or advice would be very welcome (as always - I really appreciate your input. It helps me know what to work on next).

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

Thanks for your comments Doug and Sandra.

I'm hoping to do some more practice this week. I'm frustrated only using photos though, so I'm working on a plein air kit which will work for me. I can't go far, but I'm hoping I can at least set up for half an hour near the car, or in botanical gardens/parks etc.

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

nice ones - yes do get out plein air, there's nothing like it, you see so much more than a camera does

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

Oh, wow, where do I even begin?

Are you getting more colourful as you go along, or is that the natural progress of the seasons? Regardless, I love your vivid, sparkling use of colour...so satisfying to the eyes.

Also super satisfying to me specifically is the texture you bring by using coloured pencil on top of watercolour, and all the gestural marks. I LOVE that, and not just because that's how I work also :P

All the splishy splashy-ness of the most recent ones is really interesting to look at, by which I mean, I can't take it in at once glance and keep returning to look at it more carefully. Between the gestural marks and the vivid colour, you've got me absolutely sold..I'd buy a sketch of yours any day.

Couple of questions because I'm curious...

Do use colour so vividly in your botanical paintings? Because that would be incredible. And, why did you decide to try landscapes? What is it about these landscapes that you are trying to capture or communicate?

Also..going back, I really love your dynamic pen lines, honestly, your mark-making really seems like you're having fun.

Re: Landscape Practice Sketchbook

Going really well . You might like David Gentleman as well - not so painterly but his underlying drawing and sense of pattern in the landscape, urban or rural, is amazing
