Beginnings of new painting….after I took the picture, I realized the stream is flowing at a bit of an unnatural direction.
Still striving to achieve a realistic water look but failing miserably … any tips on how to make the water more reflective will be greatly appreciated
I plan on adding a deer at the water’s edge….probably on the right side? will then need something on left to balance.
No reference photo so depending on my imagination…scene is at dusk with deer coming in for a cool drink
C&C most welcome and appreciated

Thanks….I am pleased with that part as well…now to figure out how to fix the stream….guess I’m getting some better — I can see what’s wrong but not how to fix it. Yea, our drywall has a few holes where I hang my paintings for viewing/critiquing

August 13, 2018 at 9:39 pm #675143This painting really nails the atmosphere, the twilight. Foliage, tree line very well done.
The river is kind of a problem. It meanders along nicely from right to left and the river bed turns to climb a hill. That would be a steep descent and doesn’t seem compatible with the rest of the scape. If it were to take a more shallow angle back to the right and switch back to the left again I think it work better. It would exit just to the right of the bright clump of trees in the middle of the tree line.
A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.

Thank you — I didn’t even realize it made the steep descent until I looked at the photo…your suggestion makes sense and I will work on moving the river
August 13, 2018 at 9:54 pm #675144We humans have a hard time understanding how much foreshortening it takes to render things in linear perspective. It takes a lot more than we think.
Here are some river scenes from the reference library. Please look at them. Maybe even sketch them – just draw the horizon line and the banks of the river. See how much smaller the river seems to get as it recedes toward the horizon.

August 14, 2018 at 1:26 am #675136When starting out it really helps to use some images for basic layout & shapes for composition/perspective..
One thing is to keep the water looking flat overall so flat horizontal strokes are good, avoid any humped up areas..
I did a quick idea , but my fav program is not working well so used a different one.. but her are some thoughts in visual.. Is the circled round area the moon? or sun?? If so needs to show a bit more .

August 14, 2018 at 10:31 am #675137Perspective is tricky, even after many years of painting I still prefer using a reference. You do have a really nice scene going here though. If you place a deer about a third of the way in from the right it could make a nice focal point. I don’t think you need anything else.
C&C always welcome. Michelle

Every painting is a new adventure.August 14, 2018 at 10:42 am #675150Thanks…I had a photo that I had looked at to get a general layout….but my rendition is so different I couldn’t say that I was using it as a reference. I do appreciate your comments and where to place the deer..that helps…I’m trying to avoid adding the typical large tree
August 15, 2018 at 9:59 am #675138I just noticed your posts above mine, I guess we were posting at the same time. The sky looks pretty cloudy for the moon to be showing. I’m getting the impression of a cloudy afternoon with the sun peeking through to light up the area in the distance.
C&C always welcome. Michelle
