One of my "usual"!

I guess there are two points to make before you wonderful artists get to see my work. First, I usually do pastel and portraits... Most recent have been celebritys. Second, about a year ago I became very ill and subsequently lost some of the use of my hands. Even so, I have endevoured to persevere. But using the pastels is more of an ordeal now, and I have to use full size sticks. I can hardly grasp any smaller pieces now.

That said, here is a piece I have been proud of, and yes it is a bit old. I am hoping that beginning to post pieces will motivate me to finish and photograph pieces. (I was trying to ready a website when I fell ill... ) I have also done a bit of landscape. My sales have been family portraits, a pet or two, and a series of geisha girls in kimonos! I wish I had photographed them before they went to their new home... This is about 18x24 inches, and the paper is Canson Ingres. The pastel was kept deliberately a bit on the thin side. This is of course, singer and songwriter Josh Groban.

Re: One of my "usual"!

there are a variety of oversized pencil clutches out there these days available at Blick and other stores. This is a great painting. Steady and consistent practice can retrain muscles in ways that puzzle all. Maybe these products can help in some way. Best of luck!!!

Barbara,
A very warm welcome to you.

I am sorry to hear about your recent illness. I am, however, glad to hear you have the spirit to persevere.

Your painting of Josh is AMAZING! I look forward to seeing your new works.

Hi Barbara, Welcome to the pastel forum. Sorry to hear about your health problems. This is a beautiful portrait, the background and the figure go well together. Hope to see more of your work.

Re: One of my "usual"!

Thank you all for your kind words, and for your encouragement. SSB, thank you for the links; I will check it out. Sandy and Coconut, thank you for the compliments.

I had been reading and lurking here for a few months, not knowing where I could come in at... But I feel I could post something soon; something I was actually able to finish. Pastel rules; oil is for tinning fish.

I am sorry to hear of your illness, but I do hope you won't let that keep you from your art since you are so talented. This is a beautiful portrait of Josh, and you didn't need to tell us who it was. Perhaps it would be good to try something other than portraits?

Perseverance is the key. Good luck with your ongoing work. I look forward to seeing your new pieces. You obviously have many skills, like an eye for color and form.

Re: One of my "usual"!

So glad you posted your work, it's beautiful! I'm sorry about your illness but I firmly believe your love of art will help you! Many famous artists suffered health problems and still managed to paint and draw. As long as you have that burning desire to achieve, there is nothing you can't accomplish!!!
Welcome!!!

Re: One of my "usual"!

Thanks so much for the kind words; Deb, and Marie, and Rockport and Sherry and Chris... My most recent efforts at landscape, I was staring off into space. That never happens with a portrait. It must be the saucy eyes... Everyone's; not just Josh's. Thank you all for the warm wishes.
