Talking Portrait

Hi,
Loved the demonstration.
I am beginning to use pastels after four or so years in pen and ink. The inks i do are becomming depressing to me.
Portraits are something that has allways given me butterflies and "I can't do it" thoughts, but after viewing your demonstation i feel that using your techniques i have the courage to begin.
Thank you for exibiting.

This is a tremendous demonstration for those of us who are beginning in portraiture and need practical instruction. I do not mind the idea of tracing at all if that gets all the pieces parts in the right places. I have found the grid method works well for me, but, regardless, there is real art in not loosing the likeness during the actual painting. I find your suggestions on photo alteration to pick out subtle coloration and to define the tonal range to be extremely helpful tools. This demo is quite well written with clear concise information and relevant illustration of the techniques used. Thank you from one who needs the knowledge.

Re: Portrait Demonstration: Ruth in Pastels

That was a very interesting demo! The tip of posterizing a photo seems extremely useful. Really shows the tonal values which are a key to success in a portrait.
I think your work is superb!!
