is one of my favorite artists. 18″x14″ oil on panel. Still not finished…C&C welcomed. Please excuse the glare. I used his work as a reference; he used ultra blue, I like prussian blue and wild skies…
My cat is the inspiration for my paintings. Cassandra is in all my paintings, as she wants to live in a better world. She and millions of her feline family are suffering silently needlessly. https://www.facebook.com/OilPaintingsofCatDreams/June 14, 2012 at 9:31 am #1165551Here is a better picture

Well done!
RonJune 14, 2012 at 7:25 pm #1165552Thank you rkprod-Ron for you comment. Ivan and I are partners, he said I can use his paintings as inspiration only and then paint them using my own style; he is flattered that I am a big fan…it is a win win agreement…

You did very nice interpretation of his painting. It is interesting, that he never used Prussian Blue paint.
Recent chemical tests found a lot of unexpected things in his paintings:
1. He used Lead White only and newer used any other white pigments.
2 He newer used Naples Yellow and Prussian Blue. He use UMB during only a short period of his work.
3 His favorite and widely used pigments were: Cadmium yellow; Cobalt Violet; Cobalt Green; Viridian and many common earth pigments. He used Cobalt pigments to paint blue.
A great surprise were to find in his paintings so much cadmium and cobalt violet!
June 17, 2012 at 11:41 am #1165554THANK you Gigalot!! Where did you find out this info? I have searched high and low for any info on Ivan’s palette and techniques…the only way I found out about not using Prussian Blue is the obvious…would appreciate it if you could steer me in the right direction on ANYTHING IVAN
Thank you Brain Climber-man for your comment, glad you like it.

Saw his painting in rl and there are truly phenomenal. So full of life and light. I heard that he painted in front of an audience a lot from start to finish ( he was a very fast painter) and some thought he used some tricks, for example they looked for candles behind the painting.
Great effort here Floating Dove!!! it’s a tough one to copy. I can sure see prussian blue in your painting And wild sky indeed! Here is a link to a site which shows pro artist coping his works. maybe you find it helpful.

Thank for mentioning about the pallet Gigolot. I guess that’s also why his paintings are so full of light. Titanium white kills color. Too bad lead white is too poisonous. Didn’t know he used cadmium.

June 17, 2012 at 3:43 pm #1165561I tried to Google search information about his palette in English and in Russian language and found this thread:

Press button to see full page. Also Google translator must help to understand it..Aivazovsky lived in our city in 1886 and painted two urban landscapes “View of Tiflis, 1886” I tried to found out this place to paint my own “View”:) 125 years after Aivazovsky worked here!

June 17, 2012 at 3:54 pm #1165555Thank you both Alex’s for the info! Glad you got to see his painting in person, baudolino, they are magical, aren’t they.
Gigalot, I do hope you get out there and paint, don’t forget to add your own individuality to the scene and show us the finish painting. That’s why I did not use the colors he used and did the sky the way I wanted to. His paintings were already painted and done and that’s his individuality…
I did the google russian search too, and basically, not much to be found. Nothing in Google Books or the websites. I did find this artist that you both will be interested in, you probably came across him in your searches:
Georgi Dmitriev

I found the cat – tell me there is a prize!
I was drawn to this the first time I opened your thread, and feel the same now! It’s dramatic in all sense of the word, gorgeous colors used (I use Prussian Blue a lot – right or wrong it works for my taste). You’ve captured this nocturnal scene perfectly, there is a mysterious feel to it. Your sky/cloud structure is fantastic.
One of my favorites – job well done!
June 20, 2012 at 6:04 pm #1165557Hi Mary, Glad you like it, thank you again for your comments.
I could have used Ultra Blue, but too bad, lol, I like Prussian Blue.
Since you found the cat first (xpost oil forum), you win the prize! And that is
a week on that ship in the painting, lol, don’t worry, there is good food and a classical band, AND Ivan will be there too!!!!Since you will be taking my place, can you please feed the cat in the morning and the evening, thanks.
