I highly debated posting these sculptures here in this forum, because the subject matter – snowmen – doesn’t seem quite Southwest/Western. However, these sculptures are made out of old farm parts, which feels appropriate to me. I hope you all don’t mind if I share them here.
These are kind of a new venture for me. Along the lines of wire sculpture, but more old stuff and “junk” in this case. I’ve been tapping into my dad’s drawers of old, rusted, used, and worn flat washers in order to create these snowmen. Old skeleton or flat keys make the arms, and the snowmen are then embellished with all sorts of old jewels, junk, found items, and baubles to complete their various looks. I have had such a fun time making them, and have made quite a few – this is just a sampling. They sell fairly well, so I intend to continue making them. I don’t use any glues or soldering for these, but just wire to hold them all together. Another super use for wire – I am a fan.
They all measure anywhere between 6 and 10 inches long, and I attach a loop of chain so they can be easily hung up for display.
Unfortunately, these have proved very tough to photograph, and they look much nicer in person. Art sure can challenge me when it comes to getting good images of it!
Anyway, I’ll start with one of my personal favorites, and the very first one to sell at my show last November. His hat is an old, metal doorstop, and the spattering of white on it (which looks like snow) was already there after someone painted the room this doorstop used to be in. It worked out nicely for this wintery gent. The scarf is a pin I found at Junk Bonanza last fall.
Here are some others. Their hats are generally made from brooches, the buttons and/or belts are often made with earrings, and there are other items mixed in, too. These are a fun way to loosen up as far as sculpture goes.
I hope you don’t mind my posting them here. C&C welcome. Thanks for looking!

January 17, 2018 at 2:52 pm #546749Wow! Each one is its own little treasure made with love. Did you sell them all?
I have lots of various jewelry bits and pieces if you’d like to have them; I’d be glad to start gathering up to send.

My website https://jocastilloart.comJanuary 18, 2018 at 2:06 pm #546754Thanks so much, Christel! Indeed, I do spray them with a glossy clear coat for metals. They just feel better to the touch when they’ve been sprayed. They look nicer, too.
Thank you, Rick. I really appreciate that!
Thank you for the wonderful comments, Richard!
Hud, thank you. That really means a lot! I always thought it would be fun to be a traditional sculpture artist…but alas, I can’t afford a kiln and all the other setup at this time, so I’ve learned to sculpt with things I have all around me. I appreciate your kind words.
Thanks a lot, Kay! I sold several, but have some left…and am working on making more. I really appreciate your generous offer, and yes, I am interested! I’ll be sending you a PM.
Thank you, Jo. I’m so glad you like them!

I liked these so much I showed my creative craft person and love of my life, my darling wife, your snow people. She thought they are adorable too. Great job!
