In reaction to a painting, you generally look for three things, technique, originality, and emotion. This one checks all the boxes for me and makes me smile. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks. I'm new enough at this that I keep looking and thinking it looks unfinished. Is that typical? Or is it unfinished?

Yes, it is an artist's dilemma as to when the work is done There was one famous artist, wish I could remember the name, who was banned from the European museum that held his work because he would still come in and touch up I guess the best answer is that you are finished when cannot give an additional sentence to the story you are telling.
As to anything different, you may wish to size your subject matter in consideration of the framing. In this one, the figure to our left is situated fairly close to the edge. It is perfectly fine to off the edges, but if the full subject seems to be the ladies, then probably they should all be included. Frames come with a rabbet grove in the back to allow for such adjustments, and pushing the painting toward the right side will probably take care of this one. And it's definitely worth framing

I really like the lady in blue hat.
I would say, put this painting in a floating frame and move on. Sides of the canvas will need to be finished for that. Other than that, you don't need to add anything, imho.

Re: Church Dinner on the Grounds

It looks finished to me - it's got a beautifully impressionistic style and the colors are lovely. Unique subject matter the way it's posed, and the lighting works well. I particularly like the way you left the faces without any features. Overall it just really feels like a Sunday afternoon. The question is, if you're looking for critique, do you know what you did right, and can you repeat the magic, or are you unsure?

Re: Church Dinner on the Grounds

Thanks for the comments. I really do not know what I did right or wrong because I'm just beginning to try to learn how to paint well enough that I'd let somebody see it. In this painting, I wonder if the women in the shade of the tree are not too dark. In the photo it does not appear as dark as it does on the wall. Do I just need more lighting? Should the women be lighter? Is the church too bright in sunlight?

You are right, a photo is not like seeing the painting itself, but it looks fine to me. If you have questions, it's always helpful to view any painting in a mirror, it can sometimes catch a problem that was otherwise missed. Keep painting, practice builds confidence, and you are off to a great start.

I like your picture very much. One little thing - the women look a little too squeezed together.
