Re: April Portraiture Challenge: Rembrandt!

Nancy, it is coming along, much improved over the last time you posted.

I have to wonder about the color of the original after seeing restorations of Renaissance paintings. Are you going to do some glazing later on, to match way the original looks?

Nancy, the portrait is wonderful! You've painted a spectacular portrait. Well done!

When I did mine a long time ago, I glazed it to get that aged look...lots of glazes. But...it took bloody forever!

Re: April Portraiture Challenge: Rembrandt!

Thank you, Marcia, Elaine and Dana! Here's what it looked like after it was dry this morning, and here it is again after I applied a Transparent Oxide Red glaze over it, and immediately worked the shapings in again to try to capture the exquisite blends that Rembrandt did so well!

Re: April Portraiture Challenge: Rembrandt!

what a difference that glazing did !! ... you say you *worked the shapings in again* ... by that, do you mean you wiped the glazing off in the highlights, mostly? ... or what was the process like ... i'm not experienced with glazing and would like to know more about what is involved ...

Re: April Portraiture Challenge: Rembrandt!

Thank you, Anna and Dana!

Violet, thank you, too! I took a big wide brush and made a mixture of both medium and transparent red oxide - and applied it to the entire surface of the painting. Since the "transparent" paints are actually more translucent, I did wipe away all the highlighted areas afterward, and then I reworked the darks in the facial shapings and hand.

It would have been best if I had put down a ground first of the TRO, but my reference was pale. It's better to have the darker shades first so that they'll stay thin, and add the highlights last and more thickly, so that there is even more of an impression of 3-dimensional reality.

So I ended up doing it backwards, and I wouldn't have been struggling so hard if I had followed my own rules!

At this point I'm still thinking I'm not done and I need to repaint the highlights.

Re: April Portraiture Challenge: Rembrandt!

considering you said you were still going to do some work on this i thought i'd follow in jessica's example and provide a side by side to show you how fabulously this has come along ... and maybe help you identify areas you wish to concentrate on ... i've tried to size them similarly ... in doing so, it identifies how his hand might need to be dropped a bit if you're into making that major of an adjustment ...

Re: April Portraiture Challenge: Rembrandt!

Thank you, Jessica, and Violet!

Violet, thank you for the neat side-by-side comparison, but... Instead of making me proud, I see a lot of glaring mistakes, and I think the only way I could be satisfied with what I did is if Rembrandt's ghost would come tell me so!

I may use this to help me finesse it a bit more!

Re: April Portraiture Challenge: Rembrandt!

oh, no !!, nancy !! ... just look at that likeness !! ... i think there's just tweaking to do mostly except for dropping the hand ... you've done marvelously !! ... and i'm sure your painting looks much better than the photo with it's glare and all ... you've brought it along so quickly so it still deserves just a little more attention ... yes, be proud indeed !! ... i'm sure everyone else would agree that this is coming along fantastically !!
