Re: Chess - bold idea, but I'm keen to do it

Guys,
please, any recommendations on background? I do not want it to be black at all. Something done with KIN Magics may be?

Re: Chess - bold idea, but I'm keen to do it

Here is my colour selection of FCs:
pawns: 176; 183; 190;193
knight: 156 (head), 112;167 - bottom
castle: 149, 153 (head), 157 - darkest side, 144, 145, 151, 246; 191 (scratches)
bishop: head: 230, 231, 160+121; bottom: 131, 191
king: cross - 102, 103; head: 183; body: 187, shadow on body: 176
queen: crown balls - 182, 183; body: 168, 170
checks light: 231+274
checks dark: 175+233
-----
I'm eager to hear your colour suggestions. My FC palette is in this post, and I am not planning to buy any more now. Also may be some of Lyra's will be relevant. For example, I haven't found such nice and dark blues in FC for castle, though I suppose I've got all the blue palette of them.
Please, if you can suggest any ideas, post them here with indication of figure and colour number, I'll appreciate it

Off I go ))
added 173 and 174 for dark greens.
Well, sharp edges look nice on ref, but awful on drawing. Anyone can explain why is it so?

Love the new subject, looking forward to progress. What paper are you using?

Geoff
an ordinary solid 200 or 230 g/m2, with a very light tooth. Bought it open-stock, can't remember the manufacturer. It is not snow-white, but not an ecru though. Something like "dirty-white" colour. That is why I'm puzzled with background. Black will be time-costly, and leaving as it is will be dull *scratching back of the head*

Re: Chess - bold idea, but I'm keen to do it

for now, I've finished the first period with queen (will definitely correct it later, but need to do other figures for comparison. My plan is to add colours to all figures first, then strengthen tones, then work with shadows and for the last - work with checks and background). There's smth wrong with dark piece of queen in the center, and figure looks crooked. What is better to do? make right side lighter with kneaded eraser, or add some darks to the left side? I've understood now, that it is so-o tricky to work with photo - you see shadow on it, put it on paper and - ooops, it looks not the way it should. I have to keep in mind my recent lessons where I draw jar and ball.

PS: Don't like to put too much colour on paper - I prefer the light touch.
PPS: I've post the "right photo"

Lots of shadows and highlights in this. It looks quite complicated. Can you figure out what is on the side of the queen's " head"? Looks like a brown handle or branch which is casting a shadow onto the head. You do have artistic freedom to just leave it out!

That's where I always stuck. As my teacher said lately - don't think too much when you draw, just keep in mind the light-and-shadow laws.

The same is on King's head. It looks like a reflection of check, but I can't understand, why reflection is here, as the light source is quite opposite. I didn't make it as dark as on reference, as it began to look wierd.

That what I'm going to do.

Re: Chess - bold idea, but I'm keen to do it

If you lightly draw a vertical centerline on your queen that is parallel to edge of paper, you will see that not everything is on that centerline that should be.
For example, the v shape under the top ball of queens crown is not centered under top ball of her crown, so one of them is not on centerline. It's hard to describe without getting too mathematical.
If you draw a horizontal line thru every symmetrical shape that crosses centerline, you need to check to see if that shape is centered on centerline.
I hope that this helps.

it is too late to edit my reply, but forget the second paragraph about horizontal lines. Sometimes I think about things too much. Nonetheless, I think this will be a beautiful drawing.

Re: Chess - bold idea, but I'm keen to do it

Joan
I've got your point concerning centerline, thank you.
I listen to any advice - it is just another matter to think about and look at drawing from another side.
Another thing is that I tried to avoid needless shades while making a photo and this may have lead to distortion. And also (I hope that is not true though) the paper may have moved while I was transferring the lines.
I suppose to move to other figures and then return to queen to look at it in company of others, 'cause when I work too much with smth I stop to see any side - good or bad.
