Question Chess - bold idea, but I'm keen to do it ~ WIP

Hi everyone.
Well, finally I've found a photo that I'm eager to use as a reference to create a drawing for my brother's birthday. I've got plenty of polychromos for now, set of lyra skintones and derwents -coloursoft 36, drawing 24 and several artists. Suppose to use A3 paper format. Attached my palette of polychromos and reference image.
Well, please, I accept any advice what to start with (I suppose to put a grid to photo and go step by step), which colours may be essential for such drawing. I am not very good at mixing, so will try to use pure colours. May be coloured paper, ecru or beige or smth like this will be better?
Thank you in advance for any advice.

Good luck! Such an atmospheric photo. Look forward to seeing the finished work.

I am assuming you have asked the photographer (as indicated on the bottom) for permission to use this as a reference. It is a highly creative work of art that any photographer would be proud of, and it is not a good idea to use it without authorization... Especially if you post it openly, as you could be charged!

frida
I did, but I haven't got any answer yet, and time passes by...This drawing is going to be private gift, and I'm going to make some changes for my convinience (remove several fugures first, and may be change background a little). Also I am going to put the copyright of TLB on the back side of the drawing (or on the front, in small letters). I stated all these in my letter and now wait for any answer. I'm at a total loss, as it is the best reference I could find among more than 500 photos, and can't decide, if I should start before I get any answer or not...

I am so glad you are on top of this...! As an artist I am very careful to respect the right of another artist for the use of their work.

I also understand your problem, as well as the happiness of having found a reference that gets you all excited to get going!!!

Now that you are a WC member, remember you can use the copyright-free Reference Library images, but I do hope you hear from TBL Designs soon...

I saw this on Deviant Art and I believe it is a digital drawing by the artist and not a photograph.

That's what I mean. I don't think one should copy another artist's work.

it's all tonal-work.
colours are almost useless in this piece.

Let's be frank here... I agree that stealing another artist's work etc is no good, but this is a private gift for a family member, so basically it does not matter what you draw since it's not going to make you any profit nor is it going public. Nobody can sue you for your private drawings. Just start with the gift, but I'd recommend you do not post your progress here until you receive the OK of the artist. A forum is public, so this is where you might get in trouble for the drawing.

Good luck and I hope the artist does give their consent as I am curious how this will turn out

Re: Chess - bold idea, but I'm keen to do it

Well, guys,
the time goes by and I haven't recieved any answer from TLB.
I'm sorry, but this show will not come to stage I was not sure, that bro won't make the gift public.

To be on safe side I've found another free-for-use image, took it from pixabay. It is totally different, but also quite interesting.
And, yes, I admit, I've cheated this time with transfering it to paper - outlined figures etc with soft pencil and transfered with scratching the back side - I've got only 1,5 month left, hope to be in time. Of course, image have rotated mirror-like, so I'll have to be careful with shadows. May be will change some colours, haven't decided yet. Also the format will be a4.

Truthfully, I like this picture better. Good luck with your drawing. It should be fun.

Re: Chess - bold idea, but I'm keen to do it

Joan, Vena, thank you for inspiring words.
Here is the start - transferred countours. Sorry for quality, I've already lightened them and I can't cope with phone camera, though it is quite good. The birthday is January, 31st. Not sure, that brother will be at home this time, so may have + 1 week. But will try my best to finish on time. As I spend most of the day alone with 1,3 year son, I do really have hope for 2-week X-mas holidays - husband has got additional vacation, he will help with child and I will have more time.
I've got plenty of colours to choose: FCs (see earlier post here), husband has brought early X-mas open-stock Lyras (so, I've got the whole 72-set now. BTW, luckily they turned out to be good and smooth). Also 72 KINs and different derwents (but really, don't want to mix oil-based with wax ones). So, next stage will be the choice of relevant colours. Sometimes I think that too much colours make me frustrating.
PS: if there any post how to make photos better? I fell shame for my pictures.
PPS: only I fell strange about the shadow that the Queen casts to the King?
