Coleus, demo, Acrylic inks.

This was painted for the current week's WDE in the AMAE forum - link in my signature if you need to understand the event and the forum!
The reference was supplied by Artastic - Bonnie.

I used W&N w/colour paper, 140 lbs, which I stretch because it will get very wet with this method. 1/4 sheet, approx 12 x16 inches.

The ref:

Stage 1: wet paper and drop in pure ink colours, approximately where I'd like them to be for the finish! Move board around to encourage spread then add food wrap (cling film in the UK, saran wrap in US?). I moved the film to try to create the semblance of stems and broken leaf areas.
Leave to dry thoroughly.

The colours are more subdued once dry and the film removed but already some of the organic shapes I was after are evident:

The next stage is to start the light pen drawing - I use a sepia Pitt pen, fine, but any waterproof pen will do .... I wanted to keep this light but if you want to have the pen work more in evidence, use a stronger line and or weight/size of pen.
Full size .................................................. .................................. Detail
**

I then started to add colour and shape, building the strength with layers, sometimes the same colour, sometimes different ones.
Working wet into damp areas allows some spread and some hard edges, so around the edge of a leaf I dampen (practice for amount of wetness needed!) then add the colour.
This was the 2 hour mark where I needed to let WDE'ers see how far I'd got in the allotted time!

After a total of about 3.5 hours, continuing to build colour and shape and developing the composition,I arrived at this:

I usually try to scan rather than photo the final piece because the colours are truer. With this size, it involves a number of scans and 'stitching' together, but I do get some rather nice crops when doing this - I quite like the results here and can use them for cards etc!
See what you think!

Thank you so much for this post!

Is there a reason why you use a waterproof pen, rather than a pencil?

Thank you Viv - wow! ... favourited!

Gillian - thank you too.
Using a pen is entirely personal - I prefer drawing with it as pencil over inks is shiney and can get dirty!
I could use a non-waterproof pen, and sometimes do if I want the ink line to bleed.

Wonderful technique - thanks for sharing. Are the ink colors used just for the background, or throughout the painting? Any watercolors used?

Re: Coleus, demo, Acrylic inks.

Thank you Kathy.

This is acrylic inks throughout - wouldn't like to try w/c on top of them - they seal the paper just as regular, heavier acrylics do - these are just fluid ones! The beauty of them, for me, is that w/c techniques can be used, and used much more easily than with the regular acrylics, because the inks/fluid one are such heavily saturated colour.

Maureen, fantastic painting - the colour shines through.

Thanks for showing the demo, makes me want to immediately get those inks which I've been meaning to for quite some time. You make it look so easy.

Maureen, this is amazing! I love it. You did so many crazy things and they all worked perfectly, that coleus is shimmering with light and color yet true to the plant. I'm awed. This time I'm just stunned. Cool idea using the inks and then pen and then watercolor, it's so beautiful.

Re: Coleus, demo, Acrylic inks.

Thank you cj and Bonnie

cj - you could try this with w/colour if you haven't already - the difficulty would probably arise when you try the painting of layers after the background is dry. On the other hand, with w/c you can lift out! But do try it and shout if you need help!

Bonnie - you know I'm always around if you need more explanation etc!
