Dadselfie

14x16 graphite and oil.
I wanted to do something a bit off my beaten path. I am a huge fan of Wayne Thiebaud and his colored line.....so.
The windows were just closed shades so I pulled up the shades and added the new reflections.

cheers, derek

Love the combo of styles Derek, your slight stylistic departure is a successful one.

Wonderful work! I especially love how you painted the light filtering through the trees

Re: Dadselfie

Lovely Derek, esp. the lively trees with all those exciting bits of color. I really like the shape of the shadows on the flesh - the shape of shadows coming down from the hat, the long shadow from the glasses on the left, the triangular shadow under the neck - all interesting. However I think you could soften the shadows on the flesh, especially the shadow on the left of the nose. Even if it technically matches a reference image, flesh looks more alive and pleasing if the shadows are more naturally soft.

Re: Dadselfie

Hey Jess: thanks good buddy
Thanks so much Carol and Raff
Alan: I appreciate that friend.
Thanks to Elizabeth and Ernst.
Allison: I hope that you read my intro about Wayne Thiebaud. There was no way I could have explored his style with soft shadows or gone off my beaten path with finicky edges:, for that matter. Thanks, though.
Case in point: self portrait by Thiebaud.

Interesting. I like your dad's portrait a lot better than the Thiebaud. The shadow from the glasses on his is so hard it fights with the rest of the face.

Re: Dadselfie

Allison: that dad is ME! hence the title Dad-selfie.
I posted it due to the fact that my last posts were of my son, Ben.
Thanks.
Derek

Re: Dadselfie

The lineair style works very well! The interiors you posted a while ago also had a strong emphasis on lines and I liked them very much as well. It really suits your style of painting somehow.
