Captives

This is a new centaur piece I just started. I'm still playing around with color ideas but looks like it will be a blue-violet/yellow-orange complementary theme. Originally, as I was working out the sketch for this one, I was thinking to make the centaur a milky white. About the time I decided to add the two girls, I decided copper penny red would really pop off the dark background I had planned ... so that's where it stands now. I'll save the milk-white color for something else!

Looking good. I like how you mass your shaded areas in. It's always so interesting to see your process.

Hi Kerry & VMRS! Oh...Another one of your own Centaur ideas, Eh.? Personally I don't like slave paintings. BUT if the Centaur searched the area for 2 lost city girls. Whose horses bolted away by snakes, while the girls were having a picnic in the hills of Ithica one day. Maybe he is leading the girls to the City in the background for the reward by the Family or Ithica citizens. A good Centaur tracker. The girls might have Grecian style White dress wardrobe(Like the Goddess Diana) and Leather laced calf thong/slippers on. He COULD have them on his lower back, but them walking is OK! I think they should be tied at the waist while he walks them slowly home. Not Slaves. On his back when they get tired. He would have a waist pouch with water & one with Jerky if they get hungry or thirsty! Maybe the smaller girl is about 13 and the one further back is about 16. These are my first takes on your new painting, Kerry! Let me know what you think! It IS looking very nice! Till you have new updates on this, Ill be watching! Sincerely, chiron22--Don Kephart

Re: Captives

Nice start. Don has some good ideas. I do feel that this is leaning more towards male fantasy.

What is that thing at the bottom? At first I thought it was part of the painting.

Re: Captives

Ok... the centaur is NOT the slaver any more but the rescuer come to cut them free and steal them away to safety! 😉😆 Good ideas Don! I'll see what else gets added later as I get more into the details.

I've been playing with the color scheme again and have settled on a tertiary theme ... orange violet and green. I've worked on the rough shadow shapes. While I want the background to stay simple, I may add a little indication of foliage, rocks, and perhaps something of a camp area.

Oh that thing on the lower right edge is my paint medium cup clipped to the edge of the easle. ☺

Re: Captives

After letting this dry a couple days I needed to sand it down lightly to remove the burrs and ridges in the paint.

I then spent the evening repainting the background and reworking the centaurs build. I needed to lower his horse body a bit to give more room to his upper torso. Then I lengthened the front legs and made the horse chest and shoulders deeper. His hair may get a more civilized treatment instead of the wild untamed mop he had. 😆 I also established the foreground grass.

... also he will be furred from above the scalp and below the nose to the backs of his fingers and to the tips of his toes! 😄😆

Re: Captives

I've been readjusting the centaurs anatomy again. I think he's pretty much where I want him now.
