First Steps Drawing Cartoons...

I've not posted for a long time in wetcanvas, and i usually did it in the digital forum under the user Yako-

Here i post one of my first attempts drawing cartoons (so please be light with critiques please! ).

I bought a book that teaches about how to draw cartoons but is very very basic. I'll be grateful if someone gives me some references of books specially ones that are related to movement and perspective

I drew this image with a Sharpie and coloured it with Caran D'Ache Neocolor II with the help of a little brush. It's Saint Peter waiting in his library full of biographies...for a full week he had been ordering and classifying it with the help of a troup of angels so as to make his work easier for 21-12-12 (according to maya's calendar it was going to be the end of the world, well, some people interpreted it this way ), he was expecting myriads of souls for this day but....for his surprise it was the same number as always.....

Re: First Steps Drawing Cartoons...

You obviously have drawn before...this shows you have talent and some experience. Very god artwork.

All the books I have were purchased at used book stores.

they all explain the use of storyboards, simplification, knowing your audience, developing a 'style', and keeping the look of characters consistent from panel to panel.
The best book I ever read (from a library) was the history of the Prince Valiant cartoon series.

Another important point to remember is to learn to crop and compose for simplicity.
Your artwork is wonderfully done, but very complex and condensed.

The story could be told in a series of simple panels:
a closeup of the Mayan Doomsday headline.
St Peter looking at a book (show the title).
view showing the huge number of books
helpers filing.
St peter twiddling his thumbs, possibly looking at a watch or calendar.
then the end panel which is the punchline.

cartooning by nature is 'simplicity exemplified'.

the drawing is the easy part...
