Looking good Lorna! I have some photos from the Toronto zoo of the elephants and I should get cracking and do one!

Re: The Watering Hole wip

Hello! This may not be the place to do this but I am new to Wetcanvas and to scratchboard. I've been looking it over the last few days since I first came across it (probably here) and I am very intrigued. This looks like something I would like to try but one thing I have not seen mentioned anywhere is the cost. Are the boards something that's easy to come by, perhaps in craft stores or art supplies shops? Geana

I gotta say it, too, Lorna. Wow. I did a coquille board piece 19X24" from a similar photo more than 20 years ago as a gift to my sis. That was WORK, and that board does the textures for you! A truly courageous and exciting undertaking that simply amazes me. Awesome.

Lorna, this is going to be magnificent when finished. The big board will make so much more of an impact for this particular subject. Big critters, big board. It looks awesome so far. You have such a great touch with your scratch tools. I hope you bring this to Indy.

Re: The Watering Hole wip

Thank you Les, Rick, Brett, Matthew and Harold...yes I'll be bringing it to Indy...I'll be getting it scanned. That is, if it's finished and if it turns out.

Geana...this isn't quite the right place, the forum would have been better, but I don't mind answering you. I see you are in the US...Dick Blick's Art Supplies is a good place to find boards...there are some other art supply places you might like to check into as well. They aren't too expensive starting at around $10 for 3 5X7...scroll down on that website for the price list. There's lots of helpful tips links at the top of the forum to help you get started...all you need is a sharp tool (xacto knife would do) a board and an image you'd like to do.....oh and an itch to get scratching!

Re: The Watering Hole wip

Looking great so far Lorna and will be one incredible board when finished.

I have a few photos of elephants that I took at Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo but wouldn't even contemplate trying to "scratch" one just yet! (Aus. Zoo is only about an hour's drive from Brisbane.)

Re: The Watering Hole wip

Small update.

Thanks Judy! You're ready to do one...go for it!

I went to an auction today but didn't buy a thing...a first for me. lol I did donate a print for the cause...a local voluteer fire dept. Have no idea how it did cause I didn't stay that long.

Anyway...it might not look like I did much but I worked a few hours last night starting to mark in the humps, bumps, warts and cracks on this one's forehead and trunk, trying not to make it stand out too much because it's the furthest away. I'll continue to work down the trunk and finish this elephant off before I post again.

Closer ....

Re: The Watering Hole wip

A bigger update...if you think watching this wip is like watching paint dry, you should try doing it. I needed to take a photo and get some perspective ...I've never done something this detailed on such a big board...not sure I'll ever do it again, either

I finished and added some color to the first elephant (except for the leg...still thinking on that)...and started the second elephant. Excuse the glare...I take a better picture next time.

Re: The Watering Hole wip

Lorna, if you can maintain this intensity for the duration, this could be one of the all time greatest pieces in scratchboard!!

No pressure mind you

Will be fantastic for sure

Re: The Watering Hole wip

I am completely blown away! I too will be following closely, and observing how such a big undertaking develops. A far cry from the size of board I can accommodate in my limited space claytons studio!!!!
