Smile Sleeping Coyote WIP

Project: Sleeping Coyote 23x32" canvas
Begun: July 12/19

This painting comes with a lot of love since my beautiful dog is no longer here - but I love coyotes. Ever since rapid housing started in our neighbourhood cutting into their habitat they have shown up even in our backyard. They are beautiful creatures- sort of a cross between wolf and fox with their silver and russet fur. I feel such a deep calling to paint this portrait of one of them. This is first time I’m going from my 12x16 panels to a 23x32” canvas creating the effect of a nearly life size portrait in a natural setting. The emotional impact is greater so it needs a greater expression. I really want to bring Nature energies into the home.

I began by using ceramic mastik for the rocks (I love texture) and a simple charcoal sketch:

Next using black and white acrylic I worked out my values and perspective and a bit of a boulder for coyote to lean his head on:

Then I painted the rocks with acrylic - I love this "sand" colour:

I added some special effects with more acrylic paint. I think this is going to be an autumn or late summer story. I can't make up my mind what is lying before coyote - either some fallen leaves or the remnants of a meal - will figure it out later:

Next stage will be painting the fur - I'm so excited to do this and have been watching all kinds of YouTube tutorials for a while now on how to do it. I'm switching to oils for the coyote's fur and features. This will be an oil painting within an acrylic and mastik painting lol. I love using all kinds of materials and I think must be a sculptor in me somewhere.

(BTW I'm also posting these on instagram #yvonnekeoghartist)

Any of you fur enthusiasts - all tips and feedback appreciated!

Re: Sleeping Coyote

Thank you Kay and Penny very much for commenting and your kind words

Please ignore his left "leg" - that's supposed to be his neck fur (I made a mistake - the photo was a very fuzzy B&W - how embarrassing). I don't like that hind leg at all, I will reshape it so the musculature is fixed. Also the foreleg in front. I think I need some anatomy lessons. Penny maybe you can help me in that department.

I just spent a couple of hours doing some fur working in oil now. I will add more of the thick silvery fur. Also the head needs a lot of work. The contrast of thick fur and thinner fur (for the face) is an interesting challenge - also how to make the ears velvety. I hope most of it dries by tomorrow. To be continued.

Re: Sleeping Coyote WIP

Thank you Federico.

I have fixed my silly mistakes. I'm happy with it so far just not the head - the fur needs different treatment here.

Re: Sleeping Coyote WIP

Thank you very much Chammi.

Waiting now for the paint to dry on the head so I can work the fur layers - I laid it on too thick as usual.

Re: Sleeping Coyote WIP

This is about as good as it gets for me. I learned a lot of lessons doing this. Thank you for cheering me on people.
Here's a link to a little YouTube dramatization about it.
