Re: Scavenger Hunt #588 20 - 28 May 2019

Awesome works: Joan, Jo, Scatty.

Joan: The boat, the building, and the flowers scenes are awesome.

Joe: Your graphite pieces are stunning.

Jo: I love all "Hung" set ... as well as the bottle and can.

Scatty: Fantastic still-life ... did you paint the rain-bow or it is just glare over when you take a photo of your sketch

Re: Scavenger Hunt #588 20 - 28 May 2019

I went away for a 2 days sketching trip with Songkhla Plein Air-2019. This event hosted about 120 Plein-aire painters and sketchers from around Thailand and South East Asia. There were about 20 of BangkokSketchers members there including me. Songkhla is an ocean town 600 miles south of Bangkok with a well-preserve old-town zone full of Chinese+Portugal style buildings. We traveled there by a one-hour trip via a low-cost air-line. The Songkhla Plein Air group, who were a great host to us... organized this event inside the Red Rice Mill by Songkhla bay as the event center point. During the event we mostly walked around sketching Sonkhla's Old town scenes. However, due to the high heat between 11:00-16:00 My friends and I had to dug in local museum or cafe to sketch when it gets extremely hot. The first night we arrived there, we also walked through Songkhla beach which were busy preparing for a big Triathlon event in the following morning...So I jotted down a quick sketch of their bike-check-in area of the event.
-------------
#1 Bright -- a giant local fishing boat docking for supplies, preparing for their next trip out to the big ocean.

#2 Memorable ... Title: "Painter's Joy" -- I sketched my friend doing his plein-air of the bay

#3 Old -- The Red Rice Mill ... more than 100 years old wooden rice-mill structure that the wealthy owner allows the Songkhla city to use it as a tourist/art center

#4 Warm -- well actually it is way too hot...as I had to use lots of red scarlet paints in this scene of the National Museum of Songkhla

#5 Pretty -- I tried to sketch the quick moving subjects of Norah dancers with pretty dance moves and pretty costumes ... We were also at the far end of the stadium ... so I could only did a few lines

#6 Fantasy -- several hundred of expensive bikes hanging, ready for a Triathlon event in a few hours at the breaking dawn. I never witness this madness before.

Re: Scavenger Hunt #588 20 - 28 May 2019

Scatty — I love your Buddha! He cuts such a happy and contented figure Gobs of personality, brought to life with your nuanced shading, as Joe said. Ditto Ai's question.

Joan — Wow! Ships! Amazing work — when I saw the first one, I thought for a sec that the lines of flags were strings of Tibetan prayer flags. But then I saw that they were country flags... whole strings of them! I've never seen that before! And the ships are so beautifully rendered — so much fun to explore! Ditto on the flower shop with its fresh spirit. Gazing at your scene, I could imagine the scent of the flowers, and even birds nearby ☀️

Jo — Lovely wine bottles — I like the change from liquid to empty in the left bottle and the metallic sense of the house wine. I had no clue wine comes in cans — what will they think of next

Ai — Fantastic scenes and stories! I love them all in every way — brilliant colors, scenes full of life, descriptive lines... wonderful work, beautifully presented 🎨 Thanks for sharing your journey!!!

Re: Scavenger Hunt #588 20 - 28 May 2019

Joe — Thanks for the rosary info! I read through it all. I'm grateful to discover how much attention is being paid to those deep mysteries by people all over the world

Also, thank you for the info on the USS New York. I got a little misty-eyed to learn of the Twin Towers' material that has become a part of the ship ✨

And also, thank you for hosting another fun and interesting event. From rosaries to Buddha, from poignant ship-building materials to metallic wine containers... this week has been filled with interest and meaning and life!!!

Ai, thanks so much. You had a great week of sketches in 2 days!! I love them all with the color and designs. Such an interesting place. I can't imagine swimming and then coming to find your bike and all the athletes trying to be first. Yikes! You did a great job on everything. Hot for sure. The dancing must be beautiful to see. You captured some history!

Hi, Pine Cone. Thanks a bunch.

I sketched on the porch this morning on my iPad. It takes so long and I got tired/bored with it. So it is what it is. Used the app Brushes and my fingers, sketching with few undos.

Number 5 old - Gene
Number 6 bright - shirt and blanket
Number 7 hard - chair
Number 8 soft - pillow

Re: Scavenger Hunt #588 20 - 28 May 2019

Jo - love the hatching on the wines. I have seen wine in a box but wine in a can is definitely a new one. Have one question on 'old' post. Does Gene know you used him for old?

Ai - Thanks for kind words. Truly look forward to you plein air sketches as they give me a peek into a land and culture I will never see any other way. Love the colors and seeing your paintings with the photo. Really adds to appreciation. Glad there were places to get out of the heat and that you were able to match subjects to the list. The cycle staging area amazed me. I would have looked at all those bikes and said No way. You did a great impressionistic sketch of it!

Pine Cone - Thank you for comments and being a vital part of our little group.

I will post the crucifix drawing when it is finished. It is going slow.

Thanks to all for participating!!

Keep sketching
Joe

Ha, Joe. He was asleep and when I showed it to him he did not like the likeness. Usually he just laughs but today he was not as agreeable. I took it off my blog because he sees that. He doesn't see this. Lol. Normally he says, ah, no one will recognize him anyway. I'm smiling.

Thank you all for your kind words Jo, Joe, and PineCone.

Jo: Gene's resting sketch is very nice. I can feel that he seemed very relax and in the zzz zone.

Jo — I agree with what Ai said. I love your sketch of Gene. And it has a tenderness to it. On the surface, you may have been tired and all that, but there's a gentle love there that can't be mistaken. It was kind of you to take it off the blog for him. I can relate to someone feeling self-conscious about a likeness being posted publicly. But privately, I believe he sees the love you drew into each line and color, and the gratitude you feel for the fabric and pillow that support him there as he rests — there near you.

Joe — Thanks so much for your kind words 😊 I've been worried that we might never see the finished version of your WIP of the crucifix, so I'm glad you'll keep posting updates as you go along. It's already an unforgettable piece. And it's become a valuable lesson seeing how you build up the depth as you go. I'm looking forward to seeing the next installment. In fact, I hope you'll consider doing more WIPs of your future scavenger work each week as the year rolls on.

Re: Scavenger Hunt #588 20 - 28 May 2019

Joe —

It's hard to find words...

Because your graphite painting is so superbly drawn, so respectfully attended to in every detail, I feel more than words can express as I gaze at it. You have imbued the page with genuine life, with the spirit and soul of this individual and the events that he surrendered to.

Part of me instinctively wants to congratulate you for your tremendous skill, but how can one offer that kind of language in the face of such tragedy? I want to celebrate your success with this difficult endeavor, yet the suffering you portrayed washes over me and precludes that celebration for the moment.

Thank you for sharing this remarkable and life-changing portrayal. Thank you for showing us his grace and his vulnerability and his kindness. No matter what else each of us may think about this individual, two thousand years later, we remember him.

Thank you Joe.
