Re: Technically Off-Topic

Hey Everyone,

All this talk of palettes and cleaning them has prompted me to share an Instagram post by Jane Hunt on the palette cover that she uses along with clove oil to save paint.

I use an 18x24 glass sheet of glass from Home Depot for a palette. I duct taped the edges and put a piece of gray paper under it. I clean the mixing area with a mini razor scrape and wipe it down with isopropyl alcohol that I keep in a spray bottle. I made a palette cover like Jane Hunt’s with some hobby boards, a sheet of plexiglass, and some silicone sealant all also from Home Depot. Like Jane, I put a small piece of a sponge with a few drops of clove oil on the palette and and put on the cover at the end of the day. During the day I keep the sponge sealed in a small jar.

The paint piles do last longer this way. The paint also dries a little slower on the painting. I have built in the extra drying time in my schedule. I resort to alkyd mediums if I have a tight deadline. I use pale drying oil as a medium and haven’t had much luck saving mixes or leaving paint filled brushes under the cover over night. Any paint with medium in it gets gummy fairly quickly.

I know some object to using clove oil out of concern for the integrity of paint exposed to the fumes, but this approach is working well for me and I thought I would pass it along.

Re: Technically Off-Topic

Still around On vacation for a few more days. Picked up a giant artists box with a 50 page book of palette paper from a goodwill of all places, for half of what the palette paper sells for. Just in time as I've had to be pretty stingy with palette paper at class. (I use glass at home, but prefer disposable in class).

Re: Technically Off-Topic

Hi everyone. By now, most of us have heard about the F&W bankruptcy. F&W owns WC, so there's some uncertainty about WC's future now. There are some threads with ideas for keeping in touch, just in case WC were to be no more (note that the Mods seem to be thinking that it's possible that WC will be sold, or otherwise kept going). Anyway, as a backup measure, WC user Chris (u/HalifaxCB) has started a reddit group so that we can stay connected.

It's only just begun so there aren't that many people yet, but it's easy to sign up (you'll be asked for an email address, but they do not verify) and pretty easy to use too. Here is the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/WetCanvasTalk

The other option that has frequently come up is to go to Facebook. Personally, I just won't do that after all the stories about hacking and how they sell user data. Reddit doesn't do those sorts of things, and there won't be bandwidth issues either. I hope lots of us will head over to reddit and join in there. I feel so much better knowing that just in case, there will be a way to keep in touch with all the people I've gotten to know over the years here at WC.

To sign up, just go to reddit.com and click on the "Sign Up" button in the upper right corner. There are only a few steps, and it's really fast and easy. FYI, here's the welcome message I received when I created my new account:

As you’re participating, be aware that each subreddit has its own unique personality and rules, usually found in their sidebar. Those are the basics! Once you poke around the site a bit, please feel free to check out a more in-depth explanation about what reddit is and how it works.(https://redditblog.com/2014/07/30/how-reddit-works-2/) Happy redditing!
