        Hi all,

        I am in a dilemma.
I am trying to match the blue of the first image.
The second image is what I end up with.
        It’s been causing me frustration.
I am using Atelier Interactive Acrylics.
Another member in another forum here suggested Ultramarine blue but then another member suggested sticking with Pthalo blue but layering it thinly with a medium.
        What do you think?
I think Ultramarine blue looks closer to the reference image.
I’ve already painted my flowers in Pthalo red shade.
Will this cause it to show through and make the blue even worse?S
Should I paint them all white and then try Ultramarine?
        Thanks in advance.

Have you mixed white into the blue?… it has that look!
To get a clearer blue (whichever you choose) layer the colour over a white base instead of mixing white in …. try it with both paints and see which you prefer … both are red shade blues.

        Cheers, Maureen

Yeah, I mixed white in with the blue. I thought how it was straight out of the tube was too dark so thought I’d tone it down.
So paint the tulip white, let it dry and then paint the blue as is right out of the tube over the white?
            Thanks!

For that kind of layering you might want to thin it with water or gloss medium or even glazing medium.

You can always add another layer for more coverage, but it’s hard to take off a layer.

A painting is never really done as long as I can get my hands on it.

Don’t mix white, it gets grayish blue! To achieve the tone Glaze the blue over it… use the ultramarine blue, dilute it in water like it gets thin and transparent (try it apart before applying to your piece. Start with 1:1 proportion paint:water), and apply several layers until achieving the blue tone. You need to do this slowly, and let fully dry between layers!!!! Once an application is done, you can use a hair dryer to accelerate the drying… just don’t think you’ll finish in 30 mins :)
With every layer you add you’ll get closer to the tone desired :)
Edit: damn.. cliff you were too fast… I’m furious :D

                    Thank you heaps!
Yeah I got the grayish blue haha.
So can I just do it over the top of my tulips without first painting them white and letting the white dry before glazing with layers?

You should do the shapes, forms shadows and light before start glazing…. the glaze is a transparent layer that adds tone… but it will show through… So basically finish the petals shapes before start glazing, and yes it needs to be dry.. :)
You can do the under painting in with white and the other parts (shadows and shapes) with a blue tone… If you use a light color as white under your colors look shiny, if you use a dark color the colors look dull.
See this painting is glazed over the Pen drawing… Search for the member Dcam (Derek) in the forum, he uses glazing techniques most often…

                        As they said above!

Glazes are thinned paint (see Cliff’s description) and transparent – over a white base glaze your petals – added layers to darken/enrich the glazes/colour to give form.
OR – do an underpainting in grays, full range of tones needed to complete the form, then glaze.

Try these versions on a practice piece – paper/canvas so you can keep it and see the differences – then decide which you prefer.

                        Cheers, Maureen

I don’t have glazing medium. Water will do yeah?

                                This is so stressful.
I didn’t paint yesterday because I was online trying to get help.
I really need a teacher next to me.
I go back to university soon and feel like I won’t finish this by then so I am feeling pressured to finish before the end of this month.

Also, I can’t mix that very light blue using french ultramarine blue and white.
Can someone please tell me how to make it?

The phthalos (green and blue) are way too aggressive for me. And I usually use ultra blue with brnt umber for a warm black. I’ve been using cobalt blue recently. It seems to be a less intimidating blue than the others. And it produces a lovely green with cad yellow med.

White (which really is just a very pale grey) has a tendency to dull colors with which it is mixed. Titanium white is particularly offensive in this respect because of its opacity. I prefer the more transparent zinc white for lightening colors, but I’m not sure that it will do the job for you.

                                        C&C is welcome.

So this is what I did today…
Based on that YouTube video on how to glaze, I painted one tulip in shades using burnt umber and white. This tulup is closer to the foreground and it has not had pthalo blue and white on it.
I tried my best to cover the pthalo blue plus white tulips in the background, still need more coats of white to cover it completely so I can start again. It’s taken about 3 coats so far and still not completely white.

I have attached the a) the tulip from the reference image; b) what I did on the canvas board; and c) a test on paper, I did various shades of grey using burnt umber and white mix then did one glaze layer using both pthalo and ultramarine blues, it doesn’t look right.

What do I do next? Do I glaze the entire tulip in ultramarine blue? Or only the darkest shade and try to work out how to mix the light blue then glaze the midtone? From my image of my painting, it seems pthalo did a better job at a very light blue than I got with ultramarine. Maybe I need pthalo green shade rather than red shade?
