Thank you, Lauren! Those sailors had better look out, because I've heard Sandra sing, and she does have a lovely voice!

Re: PORTRAIT GALLERY - September 2011

We started a new autumn term at our weekly Wednesday morning portrait studio yesterday -- first of three sessions with Duncan.

I started an oil study and here are some WIP shots;

First: sketched him on the the canvas board with pastel pencil and started in with the paint:

Where I was at the end of the morning's session -- after 2 hours & 10 minutes. Poor guy has no lower face...

I spent some time last night on it -- perhaps an hour at the most. Lightened the bg & roughed in the rest of his face, changed a few things...

Still lots more to do....

Sorry, Lauren, I forgot to answer your question! No, it's in oil on portrait grade canvas.

I love your WIP -- and it grows more real with each progression!

Re: PORTRAIT GALLERY - September 2011

Thanks for the votes of support, Sandra, saintlukesguild & Nancy!
Duncan is actually much more handsome than I have it at the moment and his features are a bit more refined. Plus, he has a lovely British accent (he comes from Cambridge) which reminds me of the actor Roger Moore.
I do hope this portrait ends up looking more like him -- esp. the nose, which isn't so big as it looks at present.
I worked some more on this since I posted pix. Perhaps will have another go at it tomorrow, before the oils on the palette dry.
Sandra -- I'm trying to be more of a regular 'oily girl' -- the more often I do it, the more I'll learn.

Re: PORTRAIT GALLERY - September 2011

Here are 2 WIP shots from what I did yesterday:

..... and so you can more clearly see where I'm off, and advise, here is a ref. photo. Duncan is much more good-looking than I've painted him. I know the nose is off.
(Luckily, I have two more morning sessions with the model, so I figure I can work out a lot of the bugs from the photos between sessions and finish up from life.)

C's and C's most welcome!

Re: PORTRAIT GALLERY - September 2011

I know this is nowhere near the quality you guys have posted here, but I thought I'd put one from a newby. I had 30 minutes to do this using charcoal from a live model at a lunchtime class I've been attending. First time using charcoal and from a live model and I have to admit, it was fun. Great to see so many more colours, even though it's in b&w.

Re: PORTRAIT GALLERY - September 2011

Annemarie -- thanks! I love this new portrait you are doing! I can't believe you have done all this... and just started yesterday! Who is she? You seem to have a wonderful supply of lovely models -- all in the family?

Amrit -- Glad you weren't shy. Nice structure here, and with her head tilted down, that can be hard. One thing I see is that the eyes don't line up evenly.
If you can find the portrait challenge we had earlier this year (archived -- January 2011), where Kevin posted up a bunch of Loomis head exercises, I recommend trying the ones with the heads posed at different angles.

Re: PORTRAIT GALLERY - September 2011

Lauren, IMHO you should redo the nose, it's to big and also the shape is different

I post here the stages of a child portrait (wetcanvas ref.library) I am working on

the actual stage:

Tomorrow I hope to finish it, I'll redo the background and the t-shirt, the neck, etc.

Re: PORTRAIT GALLERY - September 2011

Larubia, if you permit: the painting is very beautiful but IMHO there are two points that are not correct anatomically: the neck (there are two pair of sternocleidomastoid cords , on each side of the neck - the diagonal ones are symmetrical but not parallel) and the hand (the thumb is another plane in relation to the other fingers).

Re: PORTRAIT GALLERY - September 2011

Great work everyone! Pagnes, you little guy is charming. Love your paint quality. Love WIPS always!

I appreciate the fact that you are willing to critique others' work especially in such a kind way. That is why most of us post, so that others can comment and then we artist can decide to take the advice or not

(Some artists don't want comments and that is hard to figure out who..... Some say outright, no critiques please, some ask for critiques. Some say nothing. I am not sure of the correct way to do this)

Thanks again for your willingness to come forward and comment.
