The Portrait Gallery -- July 2010

The Portrait Gallery -- July 2010

As I couldn't find a thread for this yet, I'm starting one.

What's on your easel (or in your sketchbook) this month?
Show a finished portrait or one in any stage of progress. This thread is for showcasing your work; others will only critique your work if you request it .

So please show us what you've been up to this month. We'd love to see it.

Even if you have already shown it in the main portraiture forum, you are invited to showcase it in this thread, also, as this thread will remain in the Library Archives.

And be sure to check out previous Portrait Galleries. Lots of great work in there!

... so, I'll start things out with a monochrome pastel pencil study I did last week at our portraiture workshop of Janine. Done 8 x 11", about 2 hours:

Re: The Portrait Gallery -- July 2010

This is a portrait of my nephew. He is 15 years old and he has a certain syndrome (don't know the exact name) because of which he will die very soon.
I made this for his parents (my sister and her husband). He himself liked it and so did they. It's H2Oils on canvas, 16x16". The green in the shadoe of his face on the right is more blending in IRL. I couldn't get the colour right in the picture.

Wonderful work all around Thanks for the encouragement Kevin, and hosting the thread, Lauren

A watercolor I painted recently (after a long break). Approx A3 size, on Cartridge paper - which is all I had at the moment. Multiple ref images were used. Ref images courtesy of K.

Prosenjit - man! -oh! I think that is so good! I can see "you" in the work but I like both the painterly-ness of it, her attitude that comes through and the transitions. NIce work mate!

Re: The Portrait Gallery -- July 2010

Thank you for your comments. My nephew is still hanging on.
Lauren, great sketch of a seemingly tall woman!
Larubia, I love all your self portraits. They're very honest.
Robert, good portrait and a great hat!
Roy, you have a very good water colour technique.

Re: The Portrait Gallery -- July 2010

I don't think I have ever posted anything...at least not for a long time. I love to see the work here, it is a regular part of my day! Really great stuff!
This is Alec, from a weekly portrait group. I don't plan on doing anything to it...even though I'm sure there are faults to it . He is a 15 year old who does excellent wood carvings of faces. He has been at it for only two years!

Bouguereau...Jeune italienne puisant de leau

Black and white charcoal
Canson Ingres...flannel grey
18x24

I really admire Bouguereau work…I learned that it is hard to draw a painting…I am still trying to figure out white charcoal…I had great fun in between great frustration…

I have stopped here not sure what to do now…thanks for looking…any comment is welcome…

Re: The Portrait Gallery -- July 2010

I have posted these, my first (not very good), attempts at oil portraiture so that I can compare to my hopefully improving work in the future. Also it may be helpful for other beginners like me to see that they are not the only ones struggling.

With both of these I paid little attention to the likeness and concentrated on trying to get the skin tones right. As the first is based on a drawing of my son and the second WIP is an SP using a mirror, the tones should be very similar which they patently aren’t. So lots of work to do, particularly with colour mixing.

A small, 12x10in, portrait in oils, based on two photos from RIL. Another exercise in capturing skin tones.

Thanks for looking
