Re: May 2009 Monthly Portrait Challenge!

Some great new additions here! I am glad to see people giving it a shot.
Welcome Crystalline. Lovely touch you have, with drawing.
Steve, scrumptious handling of the clothing especially! I know the ref has blown out whites, making it hard to work from, so you did well!
I know too that her nose is at such an angle that makes it hard to build up convincingly, and is not quite an ideal angle for a portrait, so kudos to all who have taken on the task of working with that ref.

Nice work! I'd just take the nostrils back to a mid and warm, instead of one of your darkest darks.

Re: May 2009 Monthly Portrait Challenge!

This is Work in Progress after session 2, worked a bit on everyting, need some more clarity on the nose, hair and earrings. Maybe glaze the whole face to make it a little darker? Done in acrylic om cotton canvas.

Re: May 2009 Monthly Portrait Challenge!

Hello Joss. This is my very first post. I came across your site by chance. I wanted to tell you how much I love your work as I have have just finished looking at your website. AWESOME. I am not a c/p artist but I would love to try. My husband bought me some c/p for mothers day. Would you be able to steer me in the right direction as a beginner? Is there a tutorial I can follow along with? My poison at the moment is graphite. I can't seem to find the graphite thread. If and when I find it...I will post my image. Thanks for listening. And again GREAT WORK!

Hi, Welcome to WetCanvas!
Most graphite artists post in the "Drawing & Sketching" forum.
Cheers

Re: May 2009 Monthly Portrait Challenge!

Hi Helen: Thanks and welcome here!
You don't particularly have to use cp for this monthly challenge.
I don't use cp, I have tried it, but find it too difficult, mostly surface wise, to master.
There is a Coloured Pencil Forum here on Wetcanvas though, that you may want to check out. If you do a search too, there are some really old threads with cp work demos. Search is on the top right in the light blue strip across a screen page, the little drop down arrow brings you to Advanced Search and you can start searching with keywords.

Re: May 2009 Monthly Portrait Challenge!

Hello everyone - some fantastic work here. I'm just a beginner in portraits but had to try this one. I'm a little afraid of the darks but here's my effort anyway. All advice welcome. Thanks for the ref. Graphite in sketchbook 8x7

Great work, everyone!

Walt -- lovely soft colour in your portrait of Shauna!
Leigh -- 2 good portraits -- good work!
doctasi -- nice portrait of Jamal!
nanaj -- very nice pastel!
mringey -- good work in vine charcoal!
maw-t -- great pastel of Jamal!
Andy --nice soft work in conte
Michelle -- very soft work -- lovely effect!
Steve -- this is wonderful! Love how you've done the light on her face and clothes
Annie --very nice watercolour of Shauna!
jeniart -- good start in pencil!

I'm away on a trip, but brought along the challenge refs and some art supplies. Hope to join in here and post something in about a week.

Re: May 2009 Monthly Portrait Challenge!

I haven't participated in the portrait challenge for a while. I do love to see all the interpretations-so much great work! These are two really super photos to work from. Here's my attempt at the first. It's graphite and white on grey paper. I have such a hard time with eye placement. Does anyone have any hints for how to get the eyes in the right place? Mine always end up kinda scewed...
