Curt Swan, Vaughn Bode' and Mike Grell. Read waaay too many comics as a child, but that's quite all right

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

Hiya Caroline,

I was very surprised to see that someone was familiar with Vaughne Bodé. Back in 1969-1971, I knew him very well. That's when I was living with Bernie Wrightson and Michael Kaluta. Vaughn was a master cartoonist that loved to draw lizards. Vaughn used to stop in and see us when he was in town. It's a shame he chose the lifestyle he did, otherwise he might have been around to entertain us with his cartooning talents for many more years. I was always amazed to see where he was taking his characters, Cheech Wizard and Deadbone next. Vaughn was a big fan of Jeff Jones who lived on the first floor of our apartment building (we lived on the 8th floor) and he would stop in to show Jeff, Bernie, Michael and myself his latest works. I always felt that Vaughn inspired Jeff in the creation of his classic "Idyl" magazine. Well, just a little trivia, thanks for reminding me Caroline.

Thanks, Talisman. I didn't know his name, but Michael Whelan inspired an awful lot of dragon drawings from my pens and pencils, at one point. Still have a few of them.

LilKitten, thanks for Mike Grell. Early 'Warlord' was my favorite. I read a lot of comics too, though I usually raided my Dad's complete collections - it's how I got hooked on Pogo.

That must've been a great place to live. I haven't had the experience of rubbing elbows with fellow artists on a day-to-day basis since I was in college.

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

Hiya again howyadoin,

When I was a young struggling artist, I never realized that my friends like Bernie Wrightson, Michael Kaluta, Jeff Jones and Bruce Jones would be famous artists and writers when we were older, instead I just appreciated them as my very good friends. Of course some of my other friends such as Frank Frazetta, Neal Adams, Dick Giordano, etc. were famous then and famous now for what they were doing with their art. I still look back at these guys as my very good friends but not as famous artists. I was always amazed at the screaming fans at the conventions when they would meet and talk with Bernie, Mike, Jeff or me. Yes, I said “me.” I had a small reputation because of my comic book and toy art. Also, at one time, I had illustrated many toy packages including Star Trek, Micronauts and assorted Superheroes. I guess Andy Warhol was right after all when he said everybody has their 15 minutes of fame at sometime in their lives.

That's cool, Hal. I always find this stuff fascinating - I met Tom Orzechowski in Seattle a couple years ago, and he had tons of interesting stories to tell, too. I wish more of you guys were writing memoirs or doing interviews or something.

Re: Who are your three all time favorite illustrators?

Hey howyadoin,

Funny that you should mention that but Mego Museum interviewed me and you can see it here: http://www.megomuseum.com/megolibrar...interview.html

This interview is about my years with Mego toys as their Art Director and Designer. It was done at the spur of the moment on the phone, so please excuse my rambling on or getting off the subject.

My three favorite illustrators:

Bill Watterson: "Calvin and Hobbes"

Dr. Seuss: Despite the limited colors, his imagination is still inspiring.

And my all-time favorite:

George Peed: I pattern my style after him. Here are some examples of his works:
