Re: Jasons sketches...

thanks Keven...jsn...appreciated.

Jason emailed me his latest assignment completed. They were asked at the academy to do a self-portrait, and he figure most students will likely do a traditional portrait of some medium. He wanted to be slightly different and decided to do himself in a Rockwell-like mode. So, he placed himself in an intimidating setting with a friend of his actually, named "Lupe".... looking down on himself feeling quite small by comparison.

done in watercolor...

It is grand to see how well Jason has progressed in the years here on WC. Youhave to be proud parents. He has to be proud of himself for believing in himself.

Re: Jasons sketches...

thanks Marilyn...

well, we privately talk about this...and the dangers that feeling one is deserving can bring. I guess one can't escape pride entirely, but I'd rather acknowledge that believing in hard work...never giving up are established principles...like gravity. One doesn't invent gravity, one respects it...works with its limitations, finds ways to use it and ways to suspend it, but nonetheless it exists independently of me, you or anyone.

Like gravity...I've taught Jason (and others) to believe that developing yourself, your potential is an inevitable outcome..(a principle). We are seeing the natural expected outcomes of a life disciplined, goals clearly set and so forth.

Proud of course that Jason has been willing and able to embrace the necessary things to see his work progress. Prouder even more than he has done so with great humility, knowing he can yet grow and that such will always be the case.

He really did encounter a great deal of curiosity, some animosity and resentment on the part of other students when he arrived at the academy.

Most of those students were typical of college entree ages, and Jason was 27 years of age and somewhat already established or known in the art world. They could not understand why Jason felt he yet needed to learn and improve. His work is often showcased and impresses the instructors.

He has had to learn to be on the receiving end of that, which has not been easy for him. At the same time he is dumbfounded that any student would attend an art academy where one classe's tuition is roughly $6,000 and not be serious about it...but he has seen many students not apply themselves and finish assignments, show at times little discipline and passion for their art.

I am proud of his work ethic, and yet not so driven...so blinded and self-absorbed that his wife and little two year old daughter are neglected. He is a family man and devoted husband. Those things are what I am most proud of. He's quite a kid...!

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but just stopped by and am glad I did!

Larry you have a very talented son and I'm so glad to have seen his work!

He's a lucky guy too to have a father who appreciates and enjoys his talent.

Thank you for sharing!

Re: Jasons sketches...

Larry, Larry, Larry.... What can I say?? I have admired Jason's work for quite some time, and even had the pleasure of doing a characture of him a few years ago, which he requested a copy of for himself. He is the quintessential characture artist, bar none!!! I don't care what he touches, it turns to gold!

Everything he has drawn, skecthed, or painted, I have loved. And coming from an artist that gets praises myself, I know what it is to have a praise given to someone to whom I would love to learn from! Jason has what it takes. The self portrait just proves that he knows what he's doing.

Thank you so much for sharing these drawings....and as always, please share more!

Terry

Yes, this is home away from home Larry. I seem to have lost my way what with some of the things I've been doing. But, I'm back. I need to get going and show some of my latest jobs. I truly miss this place.

I do need to drop Jason a note to say hello.

Terry

Re: Jasons sketches...

Larry, your son is one of the nicest ,and greatest caricaturists I know.
He drew me, about the time his daughter was born. (I did him too, but to no great succes, I think I'll do him again soon.)
I sorta lost track of him, and when I saw his name somewhere else on this forum, I searched untill I found some drawings here.I'm impressed ,as usual.
Inspiring...
