Thanks for the challenge and info on Nelson Shanks Kevin. The references are great. I hope to attempt atleast one.
and Wow! Your digital portrait of the girl is simply stunning. I enjoyed watching the progression.

Thanks for sharing your process Kevin, I'm still learning Painter 11.
Sophie77, nicely done and I like the crop.

Re: September - October 2015 Portrait Challenge!

Hello , I would love to join in but a little nervous and unsure. I only started drawing and painting in May this year so everything is still so new to me. I can not afford to go to lessons (full time stay at home dad to a 8month old) so obviously lack any input apart from the awesome people from this site and think it would benefit me to join in a project.

How would I approach this challenge ? do I just pick one of the provided photo's and paint it?, Try to learn his style and paint it in his style, try my best to reproduce one of his paintings ? I am sorry for the newbie questions.

@Bhavani - hope to see your contribution!
@Sophie - looks great!
Thank you @AJ!
@Matt - this is for everyone who would like to participate! Pick a photo and try to draw or paint it or if you'd like to practice a master-copy of one of the Shanks paintings that is good as well! All fair questions!

Kevin

Kevin. I tried to add a photo,(not in this thread as it is a Nelson Shanks challenge ) but as usual, I cannot post as I have Safari as my browser. I downloaded firefox and tried to post but alas, not luck so, I cannot donate a copyright free image. Sorry...

Re: September - October 2015 Portrait Challenge!

sorry for the bad photo's, I will get a good light photo at the end I promise.

Chose this one to start with.

Oil on canvas 25x30cm.
Sketch done in blue pencil, with 2 layers of a clearish slightly gray gesso to mute the sketch lines and lock in place.
random picked colours are :
ivoryblack & raw umber mixed 50/50
Titanium white (ran out of zinc which I have been using until now)
French ultramrine
Cad deep red
Cad light yellow
Viridian green

Using a drying linseed oil as a medium mainly for cleaning my brush.

each photo represents me taking a tea break (take photo sit down with brew and have a good look) usually every 3 hours or so. Rather then keep posting these as you can see how I am approaching this one I will post up to date in larger size now and then when I have finished it

Still with the bad photo's due to my horrible lamp & bulb.

No no you must join in .. you just must, If I can take part being the newest newbie then anyone can . Oh I was so nervous about this but you know what so far it has been great (but lets see what people say about my finished painting .

Anyway not had much sleep since I started this, It was not raining (for once) so grabbed an outdoor photo of my painting, I have just finished it.

I left out her ear piercing hole (I was worried if I put it in I would then put a "pearl earring" in the hole )

Wish I could take a decent photo

Re: September - October 2015 Portrait Challenge!

That is just amazing! You are obviously not a "newbie" with your paints! If these people that were picking up a puppy today decide to come Tuesday instead, I may take up one of these challenges... Otherwise, no painting, just washing poodle puppies... lol

Look forward to seeing more!

Lilli

Re: September - October 2015 Portrait Challenge!

Nice work, everyone!

I'm delighted to see everyone jumping right in and participating.

I'm currently away from home (long holiday weekend here in Canada). Then, when I do return home I have a few days to prepare for a 4-day plein air trip.

Looking forward to participating -- will also post up a few copyright free (taken by me) ref photos that folks might want to paint or draw.

Kevin, is it possible for you two post up some samples of Mr. Shanks' drawing prowess?

Sorry to hear that he has passed away.
