Chemistry

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Chemistry
Year Created: 2018
Medium: Gouache
Surface: Watercolor Paper
Dimension: 5.5 x 8.5
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!

MY COMMENTS:
I took a sad multi-year break from art and started back up last year. I have always painted w/ acrylics and oils but decided to give watercolor and gouache a try... I knew nothing about them (and still don't!).

This was one of the first pieces I did... I realize the date is obnoxious :)

MY QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP:
I would like to take this painting and create a larger version of it... Any feedback is helpful! I am also testing the waters in a way, to see if I feel brave enough to post more recent work.

Re: Chemistry

The heavy black used on the decanter? draws the eye and just feels heavy in the upper corner to me.. around the figure also..
Some other dark mix of colors might work better..
Plain black needs to be used very carefully, it can suck the life out of a work in heavy doses..

Re: Chemistry

hey, barefoot, welcome to WC!

this piece would go over well in the contemporary/abstract forum and it's okay to post in more than one forum if you like. they're great for kudos/encouragements over there as compared to here, which is great for critique with a side of kudos.

my interpretation of the work is of chemistry falling heavily on me, coming to wack me upside the head, lol, my brain doesn't do well on chem other than to make a wicked volcano with vinegar and baking soda. not sure if that's close to what you were going for? bang on if it is, or perhaps too heavy like JMW mentioned.

looking forward to seeing more from you anyway, always a thrill watching a newbie artist grow into themselves

Re: Chemistry

Hi barefoot! I am trying to understand the message of your painting. I am not good with abstract paintings, so I cannot give any constructive criticism. However, I am a chemist and interested your take on chemistry. Is it positive or negative? I kind of settle with the idea being both: one side is red and the other is green on the background.

I agree that the black of the erlenmeyer (the flask) too much, and too black. Any dark color will be better.
