Forty or fifty years ago nude self-portraits were all the rage. You could hardly walk into the studios at any university in the wee hours without finding naked people, cheap full length mirrors and six foot tall canvases. The whole thing was a little strange and restricted when and where you could take your grandmother for a campus tour. I blame Larry Rivers for the whole thing. Our friend larubia has brought that sort of thing to this site. Good for her.

Being and old guy and considerably beyond my playing weight, it is with some trepidation that I suggest a challenge – the Wet Canvas Nude Self-portrait Extravaganza. There is no prize, just the opportunity to know our fellow WC artists, perhaps better than any one would want. Here is the beginning of my contribution:

Oil on canvas, 24″ x 30.” I seldom use a hand held pallette but it seemed appropriate this time.

I think this looks pretty neat actually. I’ve done some self sketches, but I was too lazy to include face, and hands… You know, I think I should make a painting of myself naked and contribute here.

I like bacon.

Sir,
The majority of the Members of our Forum (and of any other at WetCanvas!) including, obviously, myself will refuse promptly this “opportunity of knowing each other better” that you are proposing.
The reason of this is that we are interested in paints, canvases, brushes and not in heavy stomachs (generally unavoidable at a certain age), anti-

aesthetic lines or amusing positions, of the body or of the palette…

That said, even if in many cases the representation could be aesthetically pleasant, the intense ridiculousness of many other representations would be a too an high price to be paid.
Maybe this was just a joke, I want to believe that, but please let try to be serious: we are dealing with serious matters: our creativity, our emotions, our Art.

Sorry, strange colors appeared in this text, I was unable to get rid of them.

And what is it that makes you think that I’m not serious? If you don’t want to play that’s OK with me. None the less, this strikes me as a worth while exercise. The fact that the result may not be marketable has little to do with the problem. Why can’t we have a little fun with our art? Who says that everything has to be infused with a wet-blanket sense of propriety and decorum?

If you post was sham disapproval, I take it all back.

…If your post was sham disapproval…

No, no, it wasn’t “sham” at all, this is not my style: it was a clear disapproval expressed in a kind form, in respect towards you.

I understand that the pleasure of showing and seeing nudity is instinctive and, observed some limitations, normal; in this direction I think I can help, presenting three Brazilian beauties that I hire for posing: the first one is Crystal (in my atelié, a marvelous Caucasian specimen), the second is Lucia (golden brown skinned) and the third one is Mary Anne, with her beautiful mahogany color.

Well then, I suppose only young, tight bodied women are considered art. ppffftttt. What baloney. I’m so tired of seeing that!

I’m confused here. A mature man paints himself and thats not art—-then he gets insulted. I’m a mature woman with a bit of a belly AND I have nasty scars all across it from an injury I received in Desert Storm. I imagine my nude would be offensive also.

I think the painting is great and adding the palette is a playful way to add a bit of modesty.

I find the young slender female figure much easier to draw and having a variety of models of different ages and gender makes things much more challenging.

I have never really considered doing a nude self portrait though. I like Jim’s. Noticed that in his painting there is no paint on his palette :)
