The drawing is done in Micron pen, after the photo is transferred via transfer paper and corrected in many places with graphite pencil.

Then most of that is erased and I go over the faint lines with the Micron pen. THEN I paint over it a light gray tone so I can still see the pen lines but the drawing is halfway-covered.

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Hey Everyone,
Time again for an update. Had a horrible month but I think the worst is over, no need to get into the particulars. As for the painting, I concentrated totally on the crystal dishes the grapes are sitting in. Tons and tons of detail, and real fun to do but not much work gets done every day. Here we go -

The techniques to get this kind of detail with just one color are pretty varied; there are times when I have to put a light base tone in, tap it even with my dry blending brush, putting darks over them and then 'unpaint' with a tiny OMS-wetted brush to 'carve in' some light areas.

I usually try to just plow through and paint all the darks/lights in an area every day, but with the complexity of the drawing I've had to lightly put in some 'reference shapes' which help anchor me for the next day's work. It's really easy, without doing this, to let yourself get a little off in scale or symmetry.

Anyway, it may look like there's not much done since the last update, but this is the most detailed part of the painting and everything done here will help me tremendously in the color layers so I don't skimp on the detail or precision.

As always, any comments or questions are welcome, cheers!

Alan, this is on the way to being another one of those amazing paintings that only Alan P. in OC can make! Love watching these.

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Thanks so much Sno and Forestgrass!
Wish I was able to paint faster, but it's good to know my work and WIP threads are appreciated. I don't see much of either my style or WIP posts on WetCanvas, I like to think I'm satisfying a 'niche audience' .

Thanks again, stay tuned next month, I'm sure I'll finish the crystal dishes and get going on the fruit skewer (along with some more work on our friends the Stormtrooper Minions).

Thanks a bunch my friend, hope you're feeling better.
Hopefully a lot more progress this month, July was abominable to me.

Mayweather/McGregor, whoever wins, the people who pay to watch it will lose.

I predict: boredom, and a lot of missed jabs!

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Hi Folks!
It's time for another update, and just yesterday I finished the burnt umber part of the underpainting (the underpainting will get white also, in all the areas that are light-ish in the finished painting). So without further ado, here's the pic of the whole painting:

As you can see now, the crystal dish is done, the fruit skewer is done, my lego Stormtrooper minions are done and the lemon is done. Let's look at the crystal dish, the most complex part of the painting:

This is going to look killer when all the colors are added!

Next up is the top of the fruit skewer, and a Stormtrooper:

This photo's a bit crappy, but the main darks in the Stormtrooper/fruit are there. These items are closer to the light source so there is less umber underpainting in this photo. The next update will show you how the addition to white in the underpainting will really help the next layer of paint.

The next pic is of the bottom part of the skewer, and a few Stormtroopers fooling around (one happened to get a grape smashed over his head):

You'll notice that I didn't detail the strawberries very much; I plan to do that bit of detail toward the end, for some reason I sometimes choose to put detail in the underpainting, and sometimes not. The red I choose to use for the strawberries would've probably covered the seeds/highlights too much, so I saved them for later.

The last pic is a Stormtrooper shoving a lemon into frame:

Once again, I chose not to detail the lemon at this stage; the bumps in the skin and the juicy bits of inner flesh will have to wait for the later stages, as they are very close in tonal range and very light, so I'll add the detail in that area toward the end.

As always, any comments or questions are welcome. See you next month,
Cheers!

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Wise choice to leave out some of the nit picky detail. I can see why why crystal is important to have it, and yes, it will look smashing when the color goes on! The lemon and strawberry have their general shape perfectly, which is enough for now.

I have never used white in this stage before (unless it is to correct a boo-boo), so I am looking forward to seeing how you do that.

I like the way you've painted the rose and the wall paper. But I especially love all the little storm troopers and what they find themselves doing. They add humor and fun to this very detailed, beautiful work.
