Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Thank you mtpalms and Jeffro!
The vase will have some more reflections and stuff to make the Stormtrooper look like he's behind glass, but there really won't be any distortion over him, as he was dead-center (approx.) in the vase and the glass is pretty thin.

Thanks for your kind comments!

Nice work Alan!

The most laborious work is always the underpainting (for me at least).
From then on, it can only go one way, and that's up. So, hang on!

Thank you Mark and harryj!,

The 'Help' reference is that the Stormtrooper fell into the vase and can't get out, and he's looking for assistance. My attempt at a little lighthearted humor, the Stormtroopers are basically trying to help set up the still life objects but are both scatterbrained and incompetent.

Thank you Carol for the very kind words!
I hope to finish the underpainting by mid-August, so there will be much progress in the next month, I hope.

Thanks for looking in and the very nice complement!

I LOVE watching your paintings progress. Looks lovely, as usual.

Side note - those death stars are expensive. My son wanted one for Christmas, but at 3000kr (425 dollars) that ended up being a wish only.

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Your photorealistic painting style is flawless Alan! So spot on. This is what I love about painting, all the different styles there are, and how every individual's own style is going to shine through in their work, even if they are trying to emulate some other style, their own style will still leave its mark. Its kind of like how everyone has their own brand of handwriting. There are an array of different paths to go down as for which type of painting one may choose to pursue, and I think a lot of it reflects on the individual's personality. I don't want to disect this to death and look further into it then needs be, but it still interests me nonetheless. I myself, as you have obviously probably noticed, have chosen to pursue a more loose, spontaneous style of painting. I have chosen to pursue this path because I feel it allows me to express myself in the most genuine way I possibly can. This, obviously, is not going to be everyone's choice, and that is the beauty in painting. Even though I choose to paint a certain way, I still love to see works like this one that Alan is painting. If it wasn't for different style's, then paintings could get boring very quickly! There are also things to be learned from a style one may have no interest in, and you may be able to apply to your own. Very lovely work Alan! Sorry about the rant, the thoughts just interested me

Re: 'My Own Personal Minions', a new WIP

Thank you Allison and t1barkode!

Allison: Thankfully the Death Star sampler was just a combo of stock images and photoshop work, I couldn't imagine buying one for a still life setup!
(The stormtroopers cost me over $50, and I didn't even use the toys they came with.)

t1barkode: Thanks for the kind words. I too love many painting styles, as I love many guitar playing styles (was a pro guitarist for many years), but you can't pick your own individual style, it just evolves. I make no apologies for being a 'hyperrealist', but that doesn't mean I don't like other various painting styles.

I mean to, someday, expand my abilities and try new things in terms of painting but painting the way I love to right now takes up a -lot- of time.

Thank you so much Sno and Brian!
My attention to detail is my specialty. That, along with taking 2 years per painting.

Oh, come on Vasilios - your work is super impressive! As for this painting, you haven't seen anything yet, I can tell you.

For the past few days (and probably about 2 more weeks!) I'm doing the most detailed part of the painting, 2 crystal dishes, 1 sitting on top of the other. I only have about 15% done yet, but I gotta say it's going to look great, even in shades of brown.

I love painting extreme detail and reflection/refraction, and these dishes are perfect for that. This stuff makes painting so exciting for me, I can't wait to put the colors in these incredibly detailed sections. But that will have to wait another few months or so.

Thanks Vasilios and all that are following,

=A=

Alan, may I ask what the initial drawing is done in? Pencil or paint, or another medium?
