Re: March Challenge 2013 - Come one, come all!

I usually do not have the time to particapate in these challenges but when I saw the pelican and that since Ca. art is allowed, well, I just happen to have this critter that I did on paper with a bit of pastel. I didn't think I would ever let it see the light of day..but here 'tis.

Re: March Challenge 2013 - Come one, come all!

Excellent, Max, and the brick planter he's standing on is very typical of Laguna Beach, one of the hotbeds of the Southern California Plein-Aire school.

I looked that up to make sure it was the case before posting it, and came across this statement in the Wikipedia article concerning the decline of CA Plein Aire/Impressionism:

"...a long series of artistic battles were fought, with the modernists on one side and the traditionalists on the other and no one seemed to believe that co-existence was possible. When the older Plein-Air painters, most of whom were then entering their later years, were vanquished, they left the scene in bitter defeat."

Who knew art was so violent? Especially here in laid-back So Cal!

What an impressive line up, CK! I hope to be able to do one this month. I'm in love with the pelly.
Todd, you are really an early bird, getting yours done on the first. What an eye-catcher it is, too!
Max, your pelly bird is just perfect and seems so demure.

Love your version of the pelican, Max! Pelicans are funny...they seem rather homely, yet they carry themselves with such grace and poise that it makes them beautiful. You captured this beautifully. Well done!

Re: March Challenge 2013 - Come one, come all!

I had never seen this challenge before, but it looked interesting so I decided to participate. I was particularly drawn to the pinecone in the one reference, so I cropped it close, drew it and shaded it with graphite. It's not my best work, but it was fun so I'm sharing it anyway. It is done in a 6x9 Bee Paper Super Deluxe Sketchbook.

Hi Elaine, and welcome! I'm so happy you decided to participate in our Southwestern/Western monthly challenge! You handled this pine cone beautifully! It has such great textures, and the crop you used really works well. Great job! Hope to see more of your work.

Re: March Challenge 2013 - Come one, come all!

Todd, what a glorious sunset on the road! Very nice. Perfect ending to a movie ending credit type of art.

Max, what a coy looking pelican. So soft looking.

Elaine, the pinecone came out very well defined.

Here are mine.

Holbein and Sennelier oil pastel
Crescent art board 8x10 inch

on velour paper 8.5 x 11 inch

Chinese brush and sumi ink
Big Brush sketchpad 9x12 inch

Sandra, those skies! Fantastic and so moody! Just beautifully done. I love the rocky scene too. You have such an interesting approach to achieving your textures. I love the inkiness of this. Well done!

Max, love that Pelly!
Elaine, great job! I had to draw a pinecone for an online class and I know how "not easy" it is
Sandra, that first piece is simply stunning!

Re: March Challenge 2013 - Come one, come all!

Cyntada, Kay, Jenna & Donna...thanks for the kind comments.

Elaine..good job on the pine cone. Looks like a lot of time to do all those little (what are those things called, anyway?)

Sandra...really enjoy seeing your approach to your work. The oil pastel clouds are well done and imaginative as well as the bold brush work on the last one.

Re: March Challenge 2013 - Come one, come all!

Todd, great sunset painting!
Max-I love your pelican in pastels!
Sandra-beautiful, dramatic skies!

Thank you Jenna for the nice welcome! Now I have one more challenge to check monthly and not be able to keep up on... And thank you, Max, Jenna, Sandra and Donna for your kind comments! Max, I didn't know what they are called either, so I looked it up-they're "scales." I guess that makes sense. Donna, I had painted one in watercolor in a class years ago, but the instructor did the drawing for all of us. I remember him commenting about how complex they are-I completely believe him, because under all that shading is correct form in the drawing.

Re: March Challenge 2013 - Come one, come all!

OK, got swamped by work this week. You've all been busy!

Elaine, I love the pine cone! Took that shot for the dramatic lighting and you captured that perfectly here. And, welcome from me also, glad you stopped in. The Monthly Challenge is has a different host every month, so there's always something interesting going on. Glad to have you on board!

Sandra your sketches are beautiful. The oil pastel really captures the stormy sky, bravo! (I gave up on oil pastel in grade school, mine always looked like crayon drawings ) The Chinese brush painting is so wonderfully spare, the commercial artist side of me loves it! (So does the fine artist side, but I just had to give a nod for the thoroughly graphic quality you've achieved. Well done!)
