Sunrise Coffee...

As my friends over in the oil pastel section know, I love doing coffee art. No, it's not a challenge, but that's OK with me. I find comfort and fun doing these quick, little pieces (8x10). I also find it's a great way to take a break from other, perhaps frustrating pieces.

The first is more abstract as I really had fun and fooled around. The second is smoother, and may require some more fiddling tomorrow.

C&Cs are always welcome.

Regards,
Cory

Re: Sunrise Coffee...

BTW, I call it sunrise coffee because, well, the colors remind me of morning. Then again it could be sunset coffee or even autumn coffee, haha.

The second piece is bugging me as I think the cup needs to be a bit darker--perhaps more red and brown. I'll wait to hear what ya'll think.

Re: Sunrise Coffee...

Hi Cory, I like your coffee art! I like the first one as much as the second one. I can't find fault in either. It's nice to have something you can return to again and again that makes you happy. I need to find me something like that

Don't think the second one needs any work. Looks good to me!

Re: Sunrise Coffee...

Thanks Jumper. I actually used a palette knife on the first one, haha.

Re: Sunrise Coffee...

That's cool Cory, I'm trying to fight my way through to using a knife. I really like it though.

Re: Sunrise Coffee...

I like the idea, too, however I really have no clue how to use it! Also, I'm at a disadvantage since my stuff is mixed media and not just oils or acrylics. I say this because it seems it would be easier to use a knife on wet paint.

Let me explain my process real quick so you can get an idea of how I paint--

Gesso/paste mix on paper
Pencil Sketch
Outline India Ink
Watercolor areas with colors I plan to use
Oil Pastels for main blocks of colors
Acrylic black paint to cover India Ink outlines
Sometimes white acrylic for extreme highlighting.

Note--I avoid using acrylic on oil pastels as it will easily come off. I've yet to see this, but if I do cover areas of ops, I'm careful not to do a lot. As of now I'm not using any fixative (I have in the past), but may start again.

Re: Sunrise Coffee...

I'm still thinking I may fool around with the second coffee pic today. I think some more red on the front and thicker, black lines may be in order.

Re: Sunrise Coffee...

I can really feel the heat from the colours in this, very nice contrasts with the cool shadows/reflected light
