Peace

"Peace" - 9"x12" oil on panel

Painted from life. Spent about 4 hours on it. These flowers are fake but I absolutely love painting them!

Re: Peace

I like this a lot.
It looks as if the support for the setup is curved.
If so, I love it.
Lots of life and joy in this painting.
Keep it up!

Re: Peace

Thank you Bill, and yes, the rug that the vase was sitting on curved around the edge of the table, as opposed to making a perfect right angle. Im glad that you can see this, it can be hard to portray for me.

Re: Peace

Very well done. Curve adds a lot of interest - using support colors in roses is very good.

Re: Peace

Thank you guys for the nice comments Of course the longer I look at it, the more things I can see to fix, which is not a bad thing! Just things I know I can touch up later, or to keep in mind for the next one. I was really happy with this one though. I have trouble with still lifes a lot of the time. It seems some artists can just take any arrangement, throw a light on it, and portray it beautifully in paint. Me, not so much. Sometimes certain arrangements just don't work out so well for me, weather it be the color combinations, composition or what, it just doesn't excite me once I see it in the paint I put down. This one really felt good to me though.

I'm also learning that subtlety is so important. I think a painting can be so much more interesting when lots of the color and value changes are very subtle. I am always going for huge contrasts and complimentary colors. Sometimes just being subtle and being able to make a medium contrast look extreme in relation to the rest of the painting is key. I think I could have been a lot more subtle with my use of reds in this one. Also my greens are WAYYY to saturated, alot of them anyways.

Wow Eric! I'm in awe of the luscious pinks and orange tones in this fabulous still life! No one would know the flowers are fake either. Really wonderful work!!!

Re: Peace

So refreshing! I wasn't sure if that was a carpet, fabric or a book spine, but I love it! Even though it is very busy and asking for attention, the flowers are also asking for attention, but in a much more charming, soft way. I think it is this conflict that makes this painting really wonderful. And the totally drab background adds another area with a completely different character - a place to rest the eyes. LOVE IT!
